HP 5100C Scanner/Windows98

I recently upgraded my op system from Windows95 to Windows98. In trying to reinstall my HP5100c Scanner, the install process cannot
find certain files (below). Going to the HP website, I found that my software, being C5197-15402, is not applicable for Windows98, so I downloaded and installed the software HP provided. I still get messages indicating the same missing files. They are...
hpsjvxd.vxd
hpsjrreg.exe
hpsjvxd.exe
scsimap.sys
scsiscan.sys
When I say these files cannot be found, I mean on the Windows98 CD, on the HP Scanning Software CD nor in the downloaded files. HP "Customer Service" has been of NO help.

You may have to do some serious "detective" work here, Larry! Seems like you should forget the Windows CD and the original HP CD, since whatever you downloaded is most likely the latest and greatest. I had an experience recently where I was trying to install something, using downloaded drivers that I had unzipped into a temp directory on my hard drive. I kept pointing the install to that directory, after assuring that the files it said were missing WERE really there. Failure after failure! I copied the files into the Windows directory and still no luck. Finally, in frustration, I copied the files in to the C:Windowstemp directory and the install went OK. I guess I could have probably discovered that by looking in the .INF file or something but I never thought of that until later. First you should try to verify that the files you listed ARE in the download. I know this probably isn't much help, but.....

Hi Larry:

We can all empathize with your frustration . I've had some good success with installing HP products from downloaded drivers, so here's what I would suggest. I'm not really sure what steps you've taken and in what order, so bear with me if this sounds pedestrian to you.

Start from scratch, in that if the scanner shows up as installed right now but with errors, uninstall it. Scrap the file you downloaded. Unplg the scanner (is it USB or parallel?). As BigAlDoc said, ditch original HP installation CD - you don't need it. Have the W98 CD on hand just in case. Grab a beer. (Not actually necessary, it's just a nice thing to do on a Sunday. ) Now, download the full driver from the HP website - it's a 17+MB .exe file. Open the .exe file - from my memory, it's just a zip file with an executable over top, so take the default unzip destination directory (C:scanjet* ??). If the scanner's USB, then plug it in; if it's parallel, turn off, plug in and reboot, and when W98 asks where to search for the drivers, point it to that directory (don't bother checking off the CD-ROM or Wupdate options). That SHOULD do it.

Let us know how it goes, and if you have more problems, try post back with exactly what you did and what the errors were. I'm sure BigAlDoc will help you. Just kidding, there's lots of people that will chime in.
