Woody's Little Green Folder

Back in March 2002 I mentioned in a post on this board that I had put a zip file on my web site with both Woody's Little Green Folder and My Properties included. This morning I got an email from a Lounger who told me that the link was now broken, thanks to me making changes to my web site. I was gonna edit that original post, but it's too old. So, for the benefit of someone else "searching" the Lounge for that topic, here's the correct link as it now exists.

I think my web host must be down overnight. When I got up I can't connect there to check my email either. Try again later, OK Bruce?

Re: Woody's Little Green Folder

And just in case, since there is no readme file or instructions in the zip on my web page, here's a quote from a Woody's newsletter from 1st May 2001, Vol. 4 No.8:

Little green folders

.....Windows Explorer is permanently open on my system, either being used for file manipulation, viewing, copying or whatever, or minimised to the taskbar. In a previous column I gave a number of suggestions about setting it up in a more user friendly way than its out-of-the-box defaults (see Get it Right). One of the most useful changes you can make to Windows Explorer is to tweak it so that the open folder, the one currently in focus, is displayed as a green folder. The file to enable this to occur is an .icl file (zipped for carriage) called Greenfolder.icl..... Installation is made easy by a neat little utility called MyProperties.

To use this tweak, set up MyProperties, go to the Icons tab, choose the Folder button, then the Folder Open line, click Change, then browse to the folder where you unzipped greenfolder.icl and select one of the icons. The greenfolder.icl file contains various sized, green painted, open folder icons to cater for different screen resolutions. I created it using Microangelo.

I've edited Woody's quote above to account for the fact that I put his .icl file and MyProperties into one zip file.

Al,
I DL your LGF file, unzipped it and went through the change open folder icon bit but it won't apply the change for some reason.
I even checked in the reg HKLMsoftwaremicrosoftwindowscurrent versionexplorershell icons and the entry number 4 ( open folder ) points to the new green icon OK. But no change even after a reboot.
Ideas?

Re: Woody's Little Green Folder

Every time I do it, Bob I have to click the button in the MyProperties program that says "rebuild cache" or the green folder doesn't take.

Still no luck, AL,
It blew my desktop icons all over the place but didn't apply the change to open WE icons. ??

I dunno what to tell you, Bob. There's only ONE icon involved, the open folder one, and mine has changed on several instances.

Bob

I extracted the icon, then used ActivIcons to set it as the "open folder" icon. Worked for me on XP Pro.

Re: Woody's Little Green Folder

If Alan's tip isn't for you, I forgot to ask you - when you browse to the .ICL file can you see the green icon in there, and after selecting it, can you then see it in the MyProperties screen? You did press the "Apply" button the first time, didn't you? (Once an icon is selected for the first time, the Apply button is greyed out unless you change to a different icon.) Like I said, I'm fresh out of ideas. I haven't heard anyone say they couldn't get it to work, unless you've got some other conflicting app running.

Re: Woody's Little Green Folder

Hi Al,
I can see the green icon in the ICL file and I can see it on the my properties screen OK. I DID hit the apply button and it was greyed out for subsequent tries, including when I tried to change it again to another icon.
The apply button now seems permanently greyed out. I also tried deleting the My properties prog and reinstalling it but same thing happens.
Looks like you are right about some other app having control somewhere.

I'll give Alan's suggestion a try and post back.
This is no big deal, just a challenge to get it working properly.
