    DW Error Message

Whenever I boot up, I receive the attached message. Is this something to be concerned about? How do I correct it?

    Thank you.

    Re: DW Error Message

    Hi Mitchie

The following is quoted from PacsPortal.

    DownloadWare
    Dw.exe
"Executes arbitrary code from advertisers and not considered to be adware but is a security risk (see here). If a network connection is available it will connect to its servers, which can direct it to download and install software from advertisers. Installed along with programs such as MovieNetworks, Medialoads and PAgent"

My guess would be Kazaa (or possibly AOL), that you have apparently installed on your computer, has installed this program without your consent.
If you want Kazaa , try Kazaa Lite Deluxe and check out this thread Adaware Stops Kazaa Working in Software Finds and Wants.

At any rate, I would "uninstall' it immediately.

    Have a Great day!!!

Actually....I think chances are pretty high that this is the error reporting tool in Microsoft Office (Windows XP also has this). Try disabling error reporting if it bugs you.

    Re: DW Error Message

No confusion here. It's a part of Office XP (see attached screen shot). It is, in fact, an offshoot of Dr. Watson, and it's what you see when Office XP crashes and asks to report an error. I've also seen DW.EXE cause problems, too, which doesn't surprise me - Office XP has its quirks.

    Re: DW Error Message

    Edited by WyllyWylly to add URL code. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

People confuse this with "DocWatson" -- but I don't believe I have ever seen DocWatson use a file called "DW.exe".

Instead, I have to believe this is all do to "DownloadWare" and KaZaA. I agree with dumping the KaZaA spyware recommendation.

    Re: DW Error Message

Thank you Ken!!! I didn't realize Kaazaa was such a dangerous threat!

I'm assuming that uninstalling Kaazzaa will be the same process as uninstalling other programs?? <img src=/S/crossfingers.gif border=0 alt=crossfingers width=17 height=16>

Thank you again for your quickly reply and valuable advice.

    Re: DW Error Message

Strange but true! Here is a page describing it. Thank you for the information.

<font color=red>However</font color=red>, given that the user is using Win98 (based on image -- and the name of this forum!), I suspect he does not have OfficeXP. Additionally, the user *does* have KaZaA (see excessively reprocessed and fuzzy image below).

Therefore, given this information I must vote for KaZaA and NOT OfficeXP being the cause of this specific user's problem.

There is just simply too much data on "dw.exe" being spyware from KaZaA -- and this program is a frequent cause of problems.

From Cexx (one of the best Spyware sites):
dw.exe, Movie Network.exe (Downloadware / Mediacharger / Movienetworks) - Displays lots of popup ads as you surf; Mediacharger may also function as a dialer for 1-900 #s for billing of adult movie downloads. Check for removal entries in Add/Remove Programs. Some removal instructions (may or may not work?) are here. I have had reports that the program will try to deter uninstallation by telling you that doing so will mess up your browser. It is, however, bluffing.

Therefore, I would have to go with the best odds! ;-]

    Re: DW Error Message

    Hi Marie

You can do a search for dw.exe using Windows Explorer [hold down your "windows" key and press "e"] then delete the file.

Or, and this would be my choice, go to theLavasoft website and download Ad-Aware and RefUpdate, install both, run RefUpdate to ensure you have the latest ref files, then run Ad-Aware.
Ad-Aware should find dw.exe and any other adware/spyware files on your system (assuming they're in the latest ref file) and give you the choice to delete them.......Delete them.
Update your Ref file by running RefUpdate every 2 or 3 weeks and run Ad-Aware regularly.

    Hope all this helps!

    Have a Great day!!!

    Re: DW Error Message

Wouldn't it be easier to hold down the windows key, press the "F" key, then enter dw.exe into the Find (Search) box?

    Re: DW Error Message

    Yup!!!!
But I can't seem to get the hang of all the windows shortcuts, I have a full list of them at the office which I never bother refering to.
I just don't use them enough to bother I guess.

    Have a Great day!!!
