    Modem polling (WXpHe)

I'm trying to find out which programme is constantly firing up my modem and making an internet connection. I have three Pc's - on a peer to peer network - having shut those down I deduce that there is a prog. on this Pc which is the root cause. Things I've tried: disabling Norton Live Update, closing Outlook 2000; setting the IE6 default page to blank. I am now baffled and if anyone can suggest a sloution or offer advice... it will be greatly appreciated.

Fire up "msconfig" in a run pane and then give us a listing of what is listed in the "Startup" tab.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Hopefully Dave (or others) will recognize one or more of your entries. I did a quick search on SOUNDMAN.EXE and came up with this link for Answers That Work. They don't say much about what or why, except that it's "useless" and should be disabled. You may have to un-check some of 'em one at a time, reboot and see if that choice clears up the problem. OK Dave, your turn.....

    Re: Modem polling (WXpHe)

Good point, Dave, about Nav. I also kept looking and on the Microsoft site I saw that CTFMON is a part of Office XP, having something to do with text, so I wouldn't think it's trying to use the modem. I also found at Annoyances.Org a reference to QTTASK being in the QuickTime package, but the writers didn't seem to know what its purpose is. Like I said earlier, it may take some fiddling around to see what stops the problem. Good luck and keep us posted, OK?

In addition to the other replies, you may find some info on startup programs here at pacs portal - you will find a link to a useful list and description of most startup programs.

    Re: Modem polling (WXpHe)

Many thanks people for the advice so far. I visited the links and there was good information too. However the atumatic polling - whilst not so frequent - still occurs every 15mins. I have turned everything off in msconfig; only (as far as I am aware) my non-webbed accounting prograqmme is running... h e l p please!

"still occurs every 15mins" is your email program set to check for new mail every 15 minutes?

    Re: Modem polling (WXpHe)

Hi Dave. Firtly let me correct the polling interval, it is evry 30 mins. I have been timing it whilst I'm working. Next my e-mail client Ms Outlook 2K is set to check for mail every 2 min. However, this programme has not been running - I deliberately turned it off. Norton Av live update is also disabled.

Can you post a picture of the services tab of the task manager and the services tab form msconfig?

    Re: Modem polling (WXpHe)

There are many services running that could automatically connect depending on the configuration. The first I'd look at is the automatic update service. If you right click on MY Computer and select Properties then click on the Automatic Updates tab. Configure away. If you disable automatic updating I'd strongly recommend going to the Windows Update site regularly to check for critical updates.
