Control Panel Sound Events (Win XP Pro)

I'd like to resurrect this topic I asked about at the beginning of the year to see if anyone is familiar with a solution. At the time I asked the question initially, I was told by the authors of two freeware programs that it CAN'T BE DONE in Windows XP, then the topic died away. One of the things I enjoyed doing in Win 98 and Win ME was creating "sound events" for programs of my choosing, like the running of Netscape or NoteTab or whatever. Somewhere along the way, I had picked up a registry tweak that would enable one to add to Control Panel Sound Events a program activity and I showed it in <!post=this post,117936>this post<!/post>. Unfortunately, the registry mod WOULD add the event to the Control Panel, but the sound wouldn't play. What I don't understand is that lots of software, such as Quicken, ClipMate and MANY others do exactly what I'm looking for, so I don't know how come my registry tweak doesn't work.

Has anyone stumbled upon any software that claims to do this?

Nope, thanks Defrag, but that isn't the problem. I checked all those links and the last one addresses where I already am, but it doesn't cover how to ADD app events of your own. I already know how to do that, but then the sounds DON'T PLAY when the event is executed. I've found a number of places on the web that say it can't be done with Windows NT or 2000 (and therefore I assume XP). The attachments show where I already am. The left side of the screenshot shows that I've modified the registry to add the app. On the right is a shot of Control Panel sound events showing that it will let me assign a sound to the app and it PLAYS there in Control Panel when I test it, but not after I "go live."

I understand. You found a recipe for the tweak or the subkeys--like this that was supposed to work with XP and it doesn't. And searches are saying you can't.
But wherever the source thought it could. I'm looking.

Well, yes and no! That reference you found is pretty old, but I did find a number of places that tell you how to make the registry tweak, but it was for WinME and prior. I've found NONE that even mention XP. I have however, found a few places that say it can't be done in Win NT or Win 2000. The only reason I'm so pig headed about it is - if software publishers know how to do it, how come we peons can't do it also? Here's an example of a link that talks a little about the fact that it doesn't work in NT or 2000. I did have an entry in my registry like they talk about, but deleting it didn't help.....

    Al--

You're not being pig headed--you're making perfect sense. I'm learning from your tweak and I'll do what I can to find one to work in XP.

Yeah, this is very interesting, Joe. I visited the first two links you provided just the other day and implemented both suggestions. I've chosen sounds out of the "Media" directory as they suggest, as well as discovering that I DID HAVE an entry in the registry from Corel, so I deleted that (see my earlier post). And most importantly, this is ironic, the author of the software at your third link is one of the people who told me earlier this year that it can't be done! That download link clearly says that Sound Association 3.02 works in XP, so I downloaded it and tried it out. That's how I got the registry entries you see above for NoteTab - they were created by Sound Association 3.02 but when I setup sounds for the two events in Control Panel, the sounds don't play. I guess I'll write to him again and ask about this, since he WAS kind enough to respond the last time. Meanwhile, I'll find something else to worry about.
