    Fix a Virus

<img src=/S/disappointed.gif border=0 alt=disappointed width=15 height=15> I did not have the right settings on Outlook Express (turn off preview) and got a virus. Norton says it is "mimic" and "trojan horse". I assume "mimic" rode in on the "trojan horse". By running Norton, the virus seams to be eliminated, but I have lost 10 files and I get a message when opening certain windows in IE6 that says "HideWindow Error". "Can't find Window". The existing window freezes for 20 seconds and then proceeds normally. What will it take to fix this problem, without wiping the hard drive? Thanks.

As Leif said the O/S is important to know, but if you are using NAV, log onto the web site, they have multiple removal programs for just this issue (assuming you have registered with them on purchase of their AV). HTH Good Luck. <img src=/S/dizzy.gif border=0 alt=dizzy width=15 height=15>

The only problems you are getting are with IE6?
    Have you tried reinstalling it?

If the damage is resulting in a repair/reinstall not working, you may wish to check out IE Eradicator - but make sure you have something like ie5setup.exe on your pc somewhere to let you start from scratch again.

Preview is only half the picture: you're not safe from HTML inline script and various other shenanigans unless you lock down mail messages to the Restricted Zone. (See attached.) And go through the settings for that Zone disabling everything.

Depending on which sub-species of MIMIC you have, the clean-up instructions might be different. You can also read more on Trend Micro's site:

Virus Encyclopedia search results for MIMIC

Interestingly, none of those are reported as being "in the wild," and none appear to spread through HTML. Hmmm... If you don't find any matching names, you can scan using HouseCall; its report should match up with the database.
