I have a rather big Excel workbook (18 Mb) that contains a large number of links to other Excel files. My question is regarding the order in which Excel update the links. I can not include the files in question (from obvious reasons ;o), but imagine this scenario:

Cell A1 links to file a-january.xls - Cell B1 links to file b-january.xls
Cell A2 links to file a-january.xls - Cell B2 links to file b-january.xls
Cell A3 links to file a-january.xls - Cell B3 links to file b-january.xls
Cell A4 links to file a-january.xls - Cell B4 links to file b-january.xls

- I think you get the picture now ... ;o)
I have 10 rows dealing with January and this pattern is repeated for all months in the year. This brings the total number of links to 240 and the total number of different files to 24 (in my example).

As far as I can see Excel will open a-january.xls, update the link and as the next link is a different file, Excel will close a-january.xls and open b-january.xls, update the link and as the next link is a different file, Excel will close b-january.xls and open a-january.xls, update the link ....

The pattern seems to be that Excel will handle all links in a "per row" manner and Excel will not keep more than one open file at any time.

Can anybody verify this - or explain how Excel handles a large number of links.
