    Unwanted Desktop Icon (Home)

XP has a feature that allows you to right click on a picture and add it to the desktop. How do you get rid of it.

Rid of what - the feature or the picture? You need to be a bit more specific. Where are you right-clicking on the picture - on the web or in Windows Explorer? Are you selecting "Send To" and picking the desktop? Are you ending up with a wallpaper you don't want or just a shortcut to the picture file that you don't want? We'll help you if you can 'splain what you did.....

OK, now that I understand that, I think we may have a difference between XP Pro (which I run) and XP Home. When I right-click on that banner, I don't get a choice that says "set as desktop item." That must be where the difference between Home and Pro comes in. In any event, I would think you should be able to right-click on the desktop image and select DELETE. Have you tried that? In the meantime, any Loungers who are more familiar with Home than I am, please chime in.

Thanks Al... Yes, I have tried to right click and delete, but I do not get the delete option. I guess it doesn't hurt anything. Thanks for your help

Edited by WyllyWylly to add URL code. See the Quick Guide. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

I went to http://www.biscuitfire.com At the top of that web page is a picture of the Biscuit Fire which is burning pretty close to where I live. I right clicked on that picture which is a biscuit fire 2002 banner. A window opened up showing, among other things, "Set as desk top item". I clicked on that and the picture appeared at the top right of my desk top. I can't get it to go away. Any help would be appreciated.

I would guess that you turned the Active Desktop on. You can disable it by right-clicking on an empty space on the desktop, selecting properties, and then disabling the "View as a webpage" option (sorry, I don't recall the name of the tab it's on right now, and I don't have XP in front of me!)

Mark... I tried that and couldn't get the "view as a web page" option you mentioned. So, I tried to clean up the unused icons on the desktop and one of the options that popped up was the biscuit fire picture. I said, "zap it" and I'll be darned if it didn't go away . Thanks for your help...

    Re: Unwanted Desktop Icon (Home)

    Hi fiveo---
I have had a similar problem twice and Mark helped me in this thread and also I began an education as to how my logging in privileges might connect to my problem:
Cannot Delete File From Desktop. (Hope my initial zig zag posts don't make you dizzy}. Active Desktop was not a factor either time for me.
But the login causes aside, (Mark and others are much more adept at describing the correct ways to set up priviliges)--I think I can get your icon off your desktop, and I don't think it matters much as to differences between XPH and XPP.

I had two situations: 1) Dell sent me these executables for instruction and I was brand new to a computer, and I didn't know what to do with them--I don't think they were virus but could have been . They put 26 plain folders on my desktop and people kept telling me to right click and lasso and delete them. After two hours on my 60 something layer of the icon with the strange file names and .exe I believe extensions, this got old. Called Dell--no help. Finally, 2 days later I got a call--go to Windows Explorer>Desktop
Finally, 2 days later I got a call--they had researched and I was told to go to any view of Windows Explorer>Windows Folder>Desktop Folder>then within Windows Explorer I lassoed and deleted those puppies into cyberspace.

When I had the problem on the thread above, I had one single desktop folder that was empty I had created for some reason with recent date on it. I found the folder twice in the "tree" again in Windows Explorer, and didn't even go for the Windows>Desktop folder and simply deleted them from the Tree View in the left pain of Explorer.

Try this: Right Click Start>Windows Explorer>Search for your folder there. Find it; Shift+Delete it away.. Whatever this folder is, whether you have pro or Home, or Windows 9X--I believe this will work. Let me know.

    Good luck,

    defrag

Hey Defrag... Thanks for the information. I will store it away for future use. I actually cleaned it up by right clicking on the desk top open space, then left clicking on properties; left clicking on Desktop; left clicking on Customize Desk Top and left clicking on Clean Desk Top Now. It showed up and I zapped it. Thanks again...
    Bill
