Page up/down buttons not working in IE (6.0)

I have a bizarre problem which only shows up in IE. At some point the page up/page down keys stop working for scrolling in IE. The problem does not show up when I reboot the machine but eventually reappears after a couple of hours. No other programs are affected.

I have IE 6.0 and Windows 2000. I think this problem started after I installed a new mouse (MS intellipoint mouse w/ wheel). I have tried to upgrade the driver. Does anyone know what the problem might be and what can be done to solve it?

I don't think it can be a hardware problem, since all keys work as normal outside IE when the problem occurs. I am guessing that there must be some conflict between the driver and something in IE, but the driver i have for the mouse is the most current version available.

There is no repair option for IE under control panel>add remove program, only MS office. IE does not show here.

I lose navigation keys when the focus is in a textbox or on some other frame. In the first case, the scroll wheel should still work, since it targets the page itself and not any particular form control, as far as I can tell. In the second case, you have to click the desired page (frame) first to give it focus before you can use the keyboard to address it.

This is not to say that there might not be a driver conflict, but the above are the most common issues. That and memory leaks or some other defect in MSIE that just causes it to run down eventually.

Sorry, I should have explained better. I have Win98SE. However, under Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs, you can scroll for Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 & Internet Tools. If you click the Add/Remove button, another dialog box pops up & one of the choices is repair.
    Cheers,

Didn't know there was a software/repair IE, thanks for the tip Phil, its a good one to know. I use the same mouse and have had no problems, sorry cannot offer any solution on that one, other than Phil's suggestion to check for dust or dirt inside the mouse, I do clean the little ball area underneath mine now and then. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

I really don't know, but I've noticed that no one else has jumped in yet. Yes, you could upgrade the driver. I suppose it could be the keyboard, even a piece of dirt, although that should be for all apps. Can't hurt to clean the keyboard.

Have you tried Control Panel/Add-Remove Software/Repair IE? That's all I can think of right now.
    Hope this helps.

IE does not show up under add/remove programs at all under Windows 2000. I guess this is because it is considered a windows opponent, but there is no repair option under add/remove windows components

When the problem occurs, every web page is affected, even if it does not have any frames. The scroll button still works, just not page up and page down. Restarting IE does not help.

Re: Page up/down buttons not working in IE (6.0)

I think I have managed to resolve this issue.

Basically, I uninstalled Microsoft's intellipoint software and left it off completely, and the problem appears to have gone away after this. I still have full functionality of the wheel etc. even though the additional software is not installed.

I am guessing there must be some conflict between some component of the software that comes bundled with the MS intellipoint utilities and IE under win 2000.

Thanks to all who responded, your advice is very much appreciated.
