Number lists reset (Word 97 SR-2)

If I create a numbered list and hit enter without entering anything, my numbers vanish. Is there anyway to prevent this?

    Thanks!

I agree with you. Even inserting a space will not keep the first number in the document. What I did was start the numbered list, and put in a character - say - a period, and press Enter.
Then just arrow up and delete the period. Your list should stay intact.

Perhaps other Loungers could supply a more elegant solution for you if they knew more of the details/motives involved in your document with an empty list.

when typing in a numbered list and needing to insert a blank line (paragraph)without a new number, use SHIFT - ENTER instead of just ENTER. It stay in the same number that way.

As you say using shift-enter forces a new line but that does NOT make a new paragraph. The new line remains part of the original paragraph and retains all the properties of that paragraph. Which is why in this case the numbering stays.

As for creating a empty numbered list I can't offer anymore than Smerdonk has already suggested.

stuck (on a point of pedantry)

    Hi Ted:
Other than what's mentioned, I know of no good way, as this is a "by design". Supposedly, it's so you can end a list just by pressing enter. If you want a list of say 50 blank numbered paragraphs, you can:

    1. Create a 1 column table of 50 rows.
    2. Select the column & press the numbering button (or better, apply your numbering style, if you've set up styles with numbering).
    3. Convert the table to text.

The numbers remain. However, pressing enter after any pargraph will end the numbering in that row (unless you first enter text).

As Phil points out this behaviour is "by design" and I too know of no way around it directly but I would solve the problem by:
    1. Create the list
    2. Create a style for that paragraph
    3. Put in all your returns
    4. Select the now-unnumbered paragraphs
    5. Reapply the style (or do a Ctrl-Q)

Of course if you already have the style then you can start at step 3.
