Word Freezes Opening Files on Network Share (2000 & 2002)

Hi folks, I have been searching for help all over the place without success so I throw myself on the mercy of the good people of the WOPR Lounge.
    Here's the situation:
I have a user who has a consistent problem with accessing Word docs on a network share. She is using a relatively new machine (Optiplex GX150) with 256 MB RAM, Windows 2000 Pro, and until last week was using Office 2000 Standard. She is one of a dozen or so users who access a particular subfolder on this network share and apparently is the only one with this issue.
After opening 1-3 docs in a row (sometimes closing each in turn, sometimes leaving all open) Word locks up tight and closes. The Word docs are tiny, ranging in size from 22-32 KB and contain no macros. Even stranger, she can open Excel workbooks all day from the same subfolder with no problems and some of those are quite large.
    Here's what I've already tried:
Detect and Repair - no effect
    Uninstall/Re-install - no effect
Uninstall/Eraser2000/Install Office XP - Some improvement as she can now open up to 5 docs before Word dies
Updated Windows 2000 Pro from SP2 to SP3 - No noticeable improvement, no harm
Network Admins are checking for permissions "funkiness" on that subfolder - No issues yet
Searched Google groups, WOPR, and MS newsgroups - no one seems to have dealt with this before.

    Hi Don:
I haven't dealt with it either. However, I'm wondering if she has temp files on her machine that aren't being deleted. I would reboot, close all apps except systray & Explorer & search for
    ~*.*;*.tmp
Then delete all the temp files. This can only help, but may not solve the problem.
    Cheers,

    Phil,
Thanks for the quick response. Well, you are right on both counts. Getting rid of the temps did no harm, but didn't permanently solve the problem. In fact, as I am looking at it, I notice that Word continues to hold on the temp docs created after they are closed until we either manually close them individually, or go through a system-wide sweep as you suggest. I am beginning to wonder if the AutoRecover or Auto-Save features are the culprits. I'll check on that possibility today if I can get to it.
    Thanks again Phil. <img src=/S/dizzy.gif border=0 alt=dizzy width=15 height=15>

    Don:
You might also check to see that permissions are granted for any folder in which temp files are created. Just a thought. See this article

Does the user have free access to the templates attached to the files? If the Word files have an attached template that is located remotely or in a path that is restricted for that user then the problem may be coming from that area instead.

Thanks to both of you! I checked the permissions on the share where the files are stored and the share from which the template originated. The user seems to have adequate permissions (read, write, execute) for what she does with the files. The template used in most of the files that lock up her machine are from a workgroup templates folder and that's what I checked for permissions. All looked good. Oddly, the behavior seems to stopped. She said the machine hasn't locked up since a day after I worked on her machine (doing the Office and Windows updates).
It may get lumped in the category of "things that make you go, 'Hmmmm'".
Thanks again for your efforts. No other newsgroup even attempted an answer. WOPR lounge gets the victory again!
