Copying file or tables between disks (97/SR2)

My application sits on two unconnected PCs. All editing is done on PC#1. I want to periodically "refresh" data on PC #2. I have written code on PC #1 to (1) delete tables on floppy disk (floppy holds data tables only) and (2) run append query to create needed tables with current data from PC #1. This successfully puts tables on the floppy.

I have tried using same general approach to "import" data from floppy disk into PC #2 without success. Is there a simpler way to move data from diskette onto PC #2? This needs to be a friendly, fool-proof method to the user.

If all of the data is updated on PC1, why not zip the database and transfer the entire database to PC 2?

What size disks are you using? Are you able to copy complete data tables to the disks (If so, use the transfer database command.)

    - Since you are only using two PC's, if they are close to eachother, you could link them together.

    - You could also copy the data on the disk to a temporary table and then use an append query to get it into the table.

    Just some ideas....

If they have email you could zip and email the database.

Split the database into a front-end back-end setup, then all you need to do is transfer a complete copy of the current backend from pc1 to pc2.
The first step is to make a copy of the backend to floppy (if it will fit).
I have built a little utility database called backup.mdb, that simply makes a copy of another db to a floppy, and I run by putting this code on to a button on the main menu:
MsgBox ("Ensure a floppy disk is in A drive.")
    retval = Shell("C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeMSACCESS.EXE c:databasebackup.mdb", 1)
    DoCmd.Quit
This closes the current db and opens the backupdb.

Backup has just one form, which is set to open automatically and display a message. In its onactivate event is the following code:
    DoCmd.Maximize
    Dim SourceFile, DestinationFile
SourceFile = "C:databasemembersdata.mdb" ' Define source file name.
DestinationFile = "A:membersdata.mdb" ' Define target file name.
    DoCmd.Hourglass True
FileCopy SourceFile, DestinationFile ' Copy source to target.
    DoCmd.Hourglass False
    DoCmd.Quit

If there was a risk that the file was too big for a floppy, you could install the winzip command line add-on, then automatically zip the file before copying it.

It would be easy enough to write a modified version of backup that did the reverse job on pc2.
    Regards
    John

Does the source PC have a CD burner and the destination PC have a CD ROM drive?

Thanks. No zip drive and PC's aren't networked. Turns out the FileCopy command and 3.25 diskettes work.

Thanks. Unfortunately, need a simpler solution for organization in question.

This worked perfectly. I was not familiar with FileCopy command. That did it. Thanks.
