    XP Display (Pro)

I have just rebuilt my daughters machine with a new baord & chip and win XP. With Win ME I could run the screen at 640x480 and 256 colours for some of her games. Now win xp will not let me set the same card, ATI expert 98 and generic monitor at anything less than 800x600 and lots of colours. How do I enable this setting?

    Thanks,

    Simon

You need to go to ATI and down load the XP drivers for that card, if ATI has built them. You are running with the genertic drivers that come with Windows XP.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Thanks,

Tried that, ATI say use the driver on the XP disc. I think there is an unsigned driver, i'll try that.

    Simon ~

FWIW ~ I don't have the info at hand with which to back this up, but from personal experience I had encountered the fact ATI had put out a series of drivers that missed the digital signing requirements but are in fact designed to be compatible w/ XP.

How are you changing the resolution and colour depth?

In XP you can't run 640x480 UNLESS you set the compatability mode in the shortcut that you use to launch the program.

    Right Click on the shortcut.

Select Properties|Compatability Tab and choose Run in 6480X480 scren resolution

    Re: XP Display (Pro)

I downloaded the unsigned ATI driver described above and all seems well. I can turn down the res in display properties now where I coudnt before.

Previously I tried to run the shortcut in 640x480 as you described but when the game finished the screen became garbage needing a reboot.

Seems ok now - thanks all
