Illegal Page Fault formatting cells in Excel 97

I've got a problem with Excel 97. When I try to format any cell, I get the dreaded message (next to a red X):

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
If this problem persists, contact the program vendor.

In "details" of the problem, I get:

EXCEL caused an invalid page fault in
    module EXCEL.EXE

Firstly you might re-install Excel and se if the problem persists.

It is likely it has nothing to with Excel at all and might be related to your graphics card drivers. Maybe you could get the most recent versions of those and install.

Just some ideas that might help,

Thanks for the response. 1st problem: The version of Excel came with the computer and I cannot find an original disk among all the disks that came with it. The graphics driver suggestion may be correct. This "illegal page fault" was also happening with MS Word docs that were heavy in graphics. How, exactly, do I update graphics driver?

The best approach would be to goto the manufacturer's website and download the updated appropriate driver. Hopefully you know the manufacturer and also the model of card. This information may be available in the Control Panel, Display Settings.

    Good luck,

I've been getting such things on and off lately when I try to put a formula into a cell. I ended up having to remove the registry key. You could try this before re-installing Office.

MAKE SURE YOU BACK UP THE REGISTRY FIRST.
CHECK THESE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE YOU DO IT - THIS IS JUST WHAT I DID.

    1. From Start|Run , type in RegEdit and run the editing program. You will get a screen that looks somewhat like Explorer with a split screen.
    2. Click on the + (plus) sign beside HKEY_CURRENT_USER to expand it.

Click on the + beside SOFTWARE and expand it.
Click on the + beside MICROSOFT and expand it.
Click on the + beside OFFICE and expand it.
    Click on EXCEL
Save it by choosing the Registry | ExportRegistryFile command. I saved mine to the desktop with a name like HKCU8xl (for HKey, CurrentUser, Excel version 8). Check that you have this file safely on the hard disk. (You can exit from RegEdit if you want, but I didn't)

    3. Then delete that key by pressing the delete key.

    4. Repeat this (steps 1-3) for HKEY_LocalMachineSoftwaremicrosoftofficeexcel

    5. Exit RegEdit. Reboot.

Then when you start excel again, it is back to the factory settings. You have to re-create your toolbars etc.

I don't know if this will fix your problem, but if you are re-installing anyway, there's not much to lose by trying it first.

    Hope this helps
    Ruth
