    Installing Office 97 Pro - Windows 95 (SR-2)

<img src=/S/help.gif border=0 alt=help width=23 height=15> Have been trying to re-install Office 97 using the SR-2 CD in order to access ClipArt (which disappeared in some less than perfect earlier installation, I think!) .
All goes well up to a point when I keep getting this message:
"The configuration of the ODBC Microsoft dBase Driver (*.dbf) driver failed."
I have no idea what any of this means, although the word "driver" is familiar. Can anyone explain - to a non-techie - what I do to correct this?

Can't offer much help here, but the ODBC drivers can be found in Control Panel, double click the "ODBC Data Source" icon. The most likely suspect would be under the "User DSN" tab.

Beyond that I'm afraid I at a loss. In desperation I would delete the "dBASE files" from this tab and try to reinstall them...but it would be a last ditch effort as I do not know what the end result is likely to be.

    Re: Installing Office 97 Pro - Windows 95 (SR-2)

    Appreciate the suggestions.

Here's what I found when I went into ODBC Data Source:
    - User DSN Tab: only MS Access Driver (*.mdb) listed
    - Drivers Tab: above driver + MS dBase Driver (*.dbf), the "problem" one listed as installed
    - Connection Pooling: don't know quite what this means, but the *.dbf driver is listed as "not pooled" and the "disable" box is checked (this is true for the Access driver, too).

Does any of this info suggest what I might try? None of the drivers have "help" files associated with them, unfortunately! Didn't want to try anything until I sought some more input from you. Seemed to me that both drivers should be listed on the User DSN tab, but ????
    Any ideas?

Because you gave the exact wording of the error, I was able to find an article at Microsoft:

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article Q197365, OFF97: Error Message: The Configuration of the ODBC <Driver> Failed, says:

"This problem occurs when you install Microsoft Office and you currently have newer versions of Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) components installed on your system."

Four workarounds are offered. It's not clear to me which is the most convenient. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help! Will check out the article (appreciated the link to it!) and let you know my success via this forum. My hopes are high!

    Re: Installing Office 97 Pro - Windows 95 (SR-2)

    Progress Report
Just completed workaround attempt. In order of - what seemed to me - least to most disruptive, I began with Method 3 and then 2, neither of which worked (i.e., still received original error message). Method 4 did work, but I am concerned of loss of capability with no "data access" installed, especially since our Office 97 is the Professional version and I'm trying to learn Access. Should I be worried?
PS I was leery of trying Method 1, the eraser utility, because, when I read the article, it seemed as if a lot of our MS programs would be affected - and the usual MS challenge of "here's how you fix this problem; oops, now we've created a whole new set of problems!" would occur." Do you know anything abut this utility and if my worries are baseless?

You will HAVE TO run "the eraser utility" in order to take of your problem, NO AND, IF OR BUTS about it.

I have used it several times with OUT problems.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

I think now that you are where you are, you can go ahead and reinstall the data access components. Of course, they have been updated significantly since 1997. Some of these fixes are functional and some relate to security. Deciding exactly which ones you want could take a bit of research. Perhaps use Office for a while and see whether you find that you need them.

    Re: Installing Office 97 Pro - Windows 95 (SR-2)

Oh. Well. Do you mean that running the eraser utility will not affect my other MS programs or my data? (this is likely a pretty basic question, but technically advanced I'm not!).

What is especially frustrating about where I am now, considering all this began because I couldn't access Clipart, is that - even with Office 97 Pro reinstalled successfully (minus data access) - I STILL can't access Clipart! The error message says: "server application, source file or item can't be found. Make sure the application is properly installed and that it hasn't been deleted, moved or renamed" (not that I know how to do any of that!). I can get at the Clipart folder via Windows Explorer, opening the file and finding a specific graphic, but not like I used to, by simply clicking "insert" and "picture" and "Clipart".

Is that something running the utility would correct? If so, I'll cross my fingers and take a chance!

    Thanks for the advice.

Thanks. Will attempt re-installing the data access components and see what happens. Please see replay to Dave A re. my ongoing isssue re. Clipart access. Or is this something I should post on the Word board?

    Re: Installing Office 97 Pro - Windows 95 (SR-2)

When ONE is having problems one always needs to backup their data. The eraser will remove traces of Office from the registrey and most folders related to Oiice. One needs to back up their emial files if Outlook ist being used, andy templates made for the different apps within Office.

As for that Clipart, and the server not being there, I do not know anything about it.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Re: Installing Office 97 Pro - Windows 95 (SR-2)

Thanks, Dave. I'll attempt all the back ups you suggested and give eraser a try if I find I can't solve the issue any other way.

Understand you aren't the clipart expert, so will post on the Word board (which seems to have a number of Clipart queries) and see if someone there can solve my challenge! (Can you tell I am really trying to avoid eraser and specific back up: I'm not being resistant - I'm just afraid because I don't really know how to back up some of the files you mentioned. My most successful backing up has always been done on my data using floppies. And I know that is insufficient in case of a hard disk problem, but that's all I feel confident in knowing how to do!).

    Appreciate the help.

    Hi Linda:
Did you check over at the Word board. I answered your post <!post=here,180610>here<!/post> & was waiting to see if that helped.

Maybe this is unnecessary but... Just to clarify, I believe you use the Eraser between a full uninstall and reinstall of Office. Please don't mistake it for a quick fix.

    Re: Installing Office 97 Pro - Windows 95 (SR-2)

Appreciate the "warning". No, I hadn't realized that. Still trying to avoid having to uninstall and install because doing so always seems to mess up so much. However, if I can't get my problem corrected any other way, I will remember to use Eraser in between uninstall and install. Thanks.
