    Page Freeze

I am not sure if this belongs here or in the Word forum, but I will give it a shot here....

I know I Word is the last thing I should be using to edit an HTML page, but I was doing a quick text line and image insertion to a simple page, and Word locks up every time I get half way down the page. This page has no applets, javascripts, animated graphics or pointers to other pages, just a simple HTML with a few tables to layer backgrounds and simple text.

Halfway through an edit, my CPU is at 100% but no HD activity is indicated. Any thoughts on what just might be occurring here?

    Hi Bruce,

Just curios - what version and SP of Word are you using?

As you well know, I would suspect Word (and its lack of HTML capability) is the culprit. I know that several other Office apps have had problems that cause high CPU activity at random times.

Or maybe it's another of the many undocumented "features"....

    Hi Mark!

I am using Word 2002 10.0.2627.0 which is part of the Office XP Pro suite. You are right this is happening at random times and spikes the CPU for no apparent reason. If I try to open it with FrontPage from the same suite, it says it can't since Word had problems with it. Go figure that one!

I am with you on Word's HTML capabilities (or the lack thereof) and it's messy proprietary coding may well be the culprit, but just making sure that there isn't something inherent in the code to make the CPU go haywire on a simple HTML and freeze the program.

    I don't do enough serious HTML and what little I do, I do by hand, otherwise I would definitely go Dreamweaver! <img src=/S/cloud9.gif border=0 alt=cloud9 width=25 height=23>

    Re: Page Freeze

Word 2002, eh? I'm really surprised! I could definitely see Word97 having problems and maybe Word 2000, but 2002??? That's funny....

If your data isn't sensitive, could you attach the HTML file to a post so we can see if there's something specific in the code that might causing the problem. I'm almost positive that standard HTML code wouldn't cause any problems like that, but maybe Word (or another Office app) has placed some "extended" (translated - bloated) code in your document that is causing some issues.

I'm sure all of my fellow Loungers have heard enough Dreamweaver "evangelism" (Macromedia's word for it) from me, so I'll take it easy for now. Honestly, Notepad (or some other text-based code editors) are great for simple HTML editing - especially if you can do without a WYSIWYG environment. One of the best-written freeware apps I've seen for this is called First Page 2000. Check it out: http://www.evrsoft.com. (I think it's funny - if you click the "Purchase software" link they proceed to re-emphasize that this product is totally free, no strings attached.)

I'm actually very curious to see this nasty little file of yours. I'll have to test it on my system to see if it causes any similar problems. <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>

    Mark ~

Here it is! It isn't sensitive, but it is <IMG SRC=http://www.krymow.com/images/icon_heart.gif> personal, pleasant, & pretty<IMG SRC=http://www.krymow.com/images/sunny.gif>

Open it in IE then File>Edit with Microsoft Word to reproduce the environment in which I experienced the problem. Then try to open it in FrontPage. It won't even open for me in those two at all anymore.

In case you were wondering - everything worked out just fantastic...<IMG SRC=http://www.krymow.com/images/couple2.gif>

    Hmmmm.... <img src=/S/hmmn.gif border=0 alt=hmmn width=15 height=15>

That's a hard one to call.... Maybe it crashes on the line: "< ! - - BRUCE IS LIKE, THE COOLEST!! - - >"
    Just kidding...

I'm positive that the bloated proprietary Word/Office markup is causing the problem. If you were to create a "lite" version of this using only plain HTML I'm sure it would work just fine. Vanilla HTML carries only layout instructions for your browser. Therefore a simple HTML page (even with a small JavaScript function) should not be responsible for sending Word into a crashing loop...

I'm sorry I don't have a better answer for you on this one, but I can guarantee that Notepad will be your best bet for recreating this one.

    Re: Page Freeze

Actually, before recreating it, have a look at HTML Tidy

Run the file through it and if you use the right command-line options, it will clean up the MS stuff and leave you with a cleaner file.

The only downside, for some folks, to HTML Tidy is that it's a command line application and not a Windows application.

    Thanks, Bryan.

I actually ran the file through Dreamweaver's "Clean Up..." extension, which successfully removed most of the Word tags. Oddly, Word still choked when opening the "clean" file. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

    Mark ~

    I changed that line to "< ! - - BRUCE IS LIKE, A DUMB <img src=/w3timages/censored.gif alt=censored border=0>!! - - >" and it worked just fine! <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>

No.....I hope I haven't confused you: The document runs just dandy in the browser. It was originally vanilla 'flavored'. When I chose to edit it in Word (being lazy to make a couple of quick down-and-dirty changes) it would be fine until I made a change or two, then the CPU would go beserk. I'm betting w/ you on the bloated proprietary code. It's kinda funny that it can't read it's own messy code, huh? <img src=/S/disappointed.gif border=0 alt=disappointed width=15 height=15>

I only looked at this in the WinZip viewer, so it's just a first impression, but you know how hard Word has to work to render ordinary tables... 10 levels (or however many it is) of nesting could be causing the heart attack. That would be my bet if I were a betting man.

You are probably right, There are a lot of tables nested to get the overlapping background (border) effect. Word reads it fine initially, but once an edit is issued, it's own code seems to mess it up. <IMG SRC=http://www.krymow.com/images/_silly.gif>
