    Default file format (2000 SR1)

I have a user whose default file format is set to Excel 5.0/95. I have tried the normal route to change this (Tools-Options-Transition tab) and changed to Excel Workbook. Then I have verified by clicking Save As, and it appears to be working. As soon as Excel is then closed and reopened it returns to the old version (Excel 5.0/95). I've tried many times, also restarting machine and nothing seems to help. Any suggestions???? Thanks

    Sorry no solutions, some thoughts:

When you close and reopen excel, what does the Tools- options-transition tab have? does it change to Excel 5.0/95 or does it stay at Excel Workbook?

Does the user have a custom template that changes this option?

Check to see if you have a file in the XLStart directory named Book.xlt. If so, open this file, change the option, and then save the workbook.

Nope - no file named Book.xlt at all... Thanks for the suggestion.

It doesn't stay at Excel Workbook. As soon as I close Excel and re-launch it's gone right back to Excel 5.0. As far as I can tell there is no custom template. Where would it be stored if there was one?

Looks like options changed are not saved.

I would try and change some other application settings and see if they do stick after a close and re-open.
It may be that the user in question has insufficient rights on his system for the settings-save to be done

Have you used Start, Find files or folders to look for book.xlt and sheet.xlt? (there might be more than just one xlstart!)

If the above is of no help, try:

    Start, Run,
    "C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeExcel.exe" /Unregserver

    Start, Run,
    "C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeExcel.exe" /Regserver

(quotes mandatory, may have to change the path)
