Recent file list (office XP)

Is there any trick to getting office applications to display the most recently opened files? As can be expected, when I tried to install the first SP, things got really screwed up: my desktop forced me to display some info/access stuff on the right side of my screeen; my DSL would not connect from the StartUp list of applications; and the Tools | Options | General tab has a greyed-out "most recent files list" option. How can I get this back

Is this a scam or what?! We received a couple of bizarre licensing letters last year. Most appeared to be trying to sell us more stuff than we need. We tossed 'em. I'll admit I paid a bit more attention to the ones that came in fancy envelopes and implied that they thought we had exceeded our license count. We get virtually all of our Windows and Office licenses OEM, so our license count for stuff like Visio far exceeds Office and Windows. I think this made some <img src=/w3timages/censored.gif alt=censored border=0> think we needed more licenses. Pretty flimsy evidence to go making accusations, I would say. (Not quite a rant, but if you got me going...)

Anyway, I would just file it until you're ready to go shopping. (You should do your own internal auditing, of course, and keep it to yourself.)

I don't have this file on my Office 2000 / Windows 2000 / IE 5.5 SP2 machine (or uplddrvinfo.html).

Oh, it's a flaw in Windows XP/IE6 that is fixed in Service Pack 1 to Windows XP. MS has more info here: Information About Security Vulnerability in Windows XP Help and Support Center.

I think if you read my post more carefully you will see that I never inferred that I use Win95 with Office XP. I sorta lamented that if I got rid of Windows XP and reinstalled Win95 I might not have the operating system problems XP continually throws at me. Besides, I doubt that MS would allow Office XP to work with Win95.

You are right in one sense while use "inaccurate" terminology in another. The file, uplddrvinfo.html, is an insecurity FEATURE of Windows XP, it IS NOT a FLAW!!!

Hi,
Re your Recently Used File list - do you have TweakUI installed? There is an option in there (I can't remember where and I only have it installed on my work PC) which prevents the recently used files from showing. Annoyed the hell out of me too for a while!
