    Recycle Bin

I installed Norton SystemWorks 2002 Professional Edition and then I uninstalled it. Now when I double-click on Recycle Bin I get an error message: "Windows cannot find Program.exe. This program is needed for opening files of type 'Recycle Bin'." I've looked through my system (C: including subfolders) and over my home network on another computer and can't find a file called program.exe.

How do I get my recycle bin working again?

    Re: Recycle Bin

Program.exe doesn't exist - it is a name that Windows is defaulting to because it doesn't know itself.

A search of the MS KB threw up this:
Q309538 : Error Message When You Open Recycle Bin: Windows Can Not Find Program.exe
However, note that it says that it refers to Windows ME, despite the fact I had specified W98 <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

I suspect there is also a problem with their scripting somewhere. I suspect the line:
    QUOTES="YES">HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareClassesClsi d{645FF040-5081-101b-9F08-0AA002F954E}ShellNorton unerase
should not include the words: QUOTES="YES">

Unless someone else comes along with a definitive answer, I would make sure you export the key before deleting it.

Shout back if you are unclear on anything.

    Re: Recycle Bin

OK. So in the registry I don't get the first part ** QUOTES="YES"> ** then, all of the next section is there:
** HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareClassesClsid{645FF040-5081-101b-9F08-0AA002F954E}Shell ** but then the following is missing: ** Norton unerase **.

The data in the Shell folder is "UnEraseWizard"

Under Shell is the folder UnEraseWizard
The data in the UnEraseWizard folder is "UnErase Wizard" (note the space between e & W)

Under UnEraseWizard is the folder Command
The data in the Command folder is "c:Program FilesNorton SystemWorksNorton UtilitiesUE32.EXE /R"

It's all mostly greek to me and I don't know how to export the key even if I wanted to delete it.

Okee-doke. Your reference to Unerase Wizard helped me find this:

Check How to uninstall Norton SystemWorks 2002 or 2003 manually from Windows 98/Me - hopefully this will give you some additional guidance.

I suspect you are going to have to edit the registry - note "Part 3 - Create a backup of the registry" - this should keep you safe if you follow their instructions.

    Re: Recycle Bin

Whoo Boy! I followed all their directions - meticulously and although the icon for the Recycle Bin is now empty, I'm now getting an IE Scripting Error (attached).

Geez, where do you come up with all this knowledge?!

    Re: Recycle Bin

Are you getting this error when you access your recycle bin?
Are you otherwise now getting normal functionality with the bin?

    Re: Recycle Bin

Yes, when I double-click on the Recycle Bin on the desktop it opens up normally, but when I click on "Empty Recycle Bin" that's when I get the scripting error. I can right-click on the items in the Recycle Bin and delete them and that works.

Also, when I delete a document or file etc (not already in the Recycle Bin) I get the regular dialogue asking me if I want to send this item to the Recycle Bin and when I click on Yes, the item does get sent to the Recycle Bin.

    Hmmm...

I'm sure not happy with Norton. I talked with my software vendor and they said it is fairly common for Norton products to do wierd things on uninstall...

p.s. the Recycle Bin restore works fine. I also noticed the icon is "empty" even when the Bin has items in it.

    Re: Recycle Bin

OK - looks like we've made some progress! I'll see if I can find some info on the scripting error.

Right-click on your desktop - you should be able to reset the recycle bin icons as below. Something I've just noticed is that you only get a choice of full and empty. I wonder what you get if it is only part full.....?

    Re: Recycle Bin

Ahhhh, verrrry interesting. (Did you get Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In on the telly in the late 60's/early 70's in the UK?)

When I right-clicked on the Desktop and selected Effects, the Recycle Bin icons were those "unknown Windows item" icons. I selected each one and clicked on Default Icon. That restored them but did you know your icons are slightly different than mine? My bins have square corners with a green recycle logo.

I went back and attempted to empty the Recycle Bin normally but I still get the scripting error.

    (Remember R&M? Yes! <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>)

Are you using Web view in Explorer? The recycle.htt file is the template for the Recycle Bin when you are using web view.

You could try running the System File Checker Tool which should repair it - otherwise turn off Script Debugging in your IE Tools > Options.

(I'm on W2K, hence the different icons.)

    Re: Recycle Bin

What a pain in the a**!

My Active Desktop is normally viewed as a web page so I turned that off.
I ran SFC earlier and ran it again.
I restored recycle.htt from another computer on my network.
I copied recycle.htt from another computer on my network.
I restarted my system after each change.

    Same problem. No change. Damn Norton! <img src=/S/bash.gif border=0 alt=bash width=35 height=39>

    Re: Recycle Bin

Are you running any script and/or ad blocker?
These have been known to mess with anything that runs a script.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Re: Recycle Bin

Leif suggested I turn off Script Debugging in my IE Tools > Options, which I have done. I have also de-selected Active Desktop --> View As Web Page.

I run Task Scheduler, McAfee Virus Scan, Palm Desktop Alarm Manager, Zone Alarm and FreeMem Pro, but no script or ad blockers that I am aware of.

I went into msconfig and turned all of the above off and rebooted.

No change. I still get the script error when I try to empty my Recycle Bin. <img src=/S/headthrob.gif border=0 alt=headthrob width=15 height=15>

    Re: Recycle Bin

    Last two straws:

1] Make sure the Display a notification... is de-selected as below (I should have included that in the clip above!)

2] Do a thorough clean-out of your IE Temp files - see also Q186099 : Description of the Disk Cleanup Tool

    Re: Recycle Bin

Thanks for all your effort Leif & Dave. When I find the time (!!??) I guess it's time to wipe the drive and do a clean install.
