Check something before user goes to next record (Access 2000/VBA)

Sorry guys, I'm still trying to get more proficient with VBA. When the user clicks the default previous/next record button in Microsoft Access 2000, I would like to perform a check on the form and then send out an error message if applicable. Then, I do not want the user to be able to advance to the next record unless the error is corrected (they must stay on the same record and fix the error). What is the best way/code to do this...? Thank you for your time and insight...
