Noise Reduction

I recently went through an excersize of trying to reduce the overall reduction of noise/sound coming from all of the components in my system. After some tests with a DB meter (and my ears) I found that MOST of the noise was coming from the fans inside and lesser amounts from the HD's and a very small amount from the Power supply. I presently have 6 fans in my system. One on the CPU(P4), one on the video card, one intake on the front of the box, one exhaust on the rear and two on the power supply (600W) in and out. I had shopped around to find the quietest fans around, but the total combined sound was just too much for me.
I then looked at sound deadening materials like Dynamat etc., but they were only small 10"x 8" pads and very expensive! (many would be needed)
Finally, I located a company (McMaster-Carr Supply Co.) that sold 1"x14"x48" sheets of adhesive backed high density foam for about $8.00. Ordered this and carefully installed the foam on the both sides of the case and bottom and a small piece on the top, making SURE that I left ALL vents and other openings intact. Replaced everything and the difference was DRAMATIC Combined noise/sound coming from the case is barely audible and or measureable!
I don't know how everyone else feels about background noise around the computer, but I can't stand to have that kind of distraction. This really did the job for me. I thought I would pass along this to anyone else that might feel that way.

Also, BTW, I have been monitoring the heat inside the box, and CPU has been steady at 42C and at the PS. So heat build up has not occurred.

Re: Noise Reduction

I too was seeking such a solution a year ago. I'm too cheap to spend $8 per sheet. I went down to Home Depot and bought a yard of their cheapest (thinnest) carpet padding and hot glued it to the insides of my case. It cost around $1.50 in all. Too, I made sure to accommodate for vent holes; and too I have dramatic results without temp change. It took an afternoon of my wife telling me to get that thing off the livingroom floor and a vacuum job when done, but now I can leave on and read a book without distraction.

Re: Noise Reduction

That is a wonderful tip! If I ever decide to make my machine quieter I will definitely try it.

Frankly, I don't know what I would do without the noisy hum of two computers in my small apartment. I've gotten used to it over the years. A few times when I've returned from a week-long trip (when I actually did shut the computers down) I felt unfomcortable when I walked in to a very quiet room. I couldn't wait to turn them back on just for the satisfying hum of the fans and hard drives...

I'll second that! I can't sleep if I don't have the white noise coming from my computer's fans. It's just too quiet.

Re: Noise Reduction

I was the same way for years during high school and college. Once I moved out of my parents house however, I've had the noise of the street racers outside my window to "sooth" me.

But I can be, and I am! I have a standard Compaq box - no extra cooling fans, no extensive graphics card fans, just the standard one or two on the PSU. I find the noise helpful in drowning out the silence that creeps in from outside.

No street races or regular automotive disturbances, Chris - I'm tucked away in a nice, rural part of Michigan.

No contest.....if I had to vote for CPU fan noise or the sound of ocean surf nearby....I sure would not vote for the mechanical one.
