Add... option disabled in spell checking (97)

Does anyone know what can cause the Add... command to be disabled on the right-click menu for a word identified by Word as a misspelling? This happens to my wife when using Word at work. As she's a laboratory scientist, she has to teach Word several new words each day. The only explanations I could think of were missing or renamed Custom dictionary files. When I tried recreating this situation at home (where we have Word 2000), I got different behaviour.

If the custom.dic file is read only (or in a read only folder or corrupted), the Add button will be grayed out.

If you are sure the file is writable by the current user and the context menu Add button is still grayed out,
select the misspelled word, right-click, click "Spelling" then close the Spelling dialog. Now right click
on the misspelled word. Add button should be enabled. I tested this in Word 97. Your results may vary.
