    Nortin Antivirus 2003

    Hello,
I am having a problem and hope that someone will be able to help me. The problem is Nortin Antivirus 2003. I was using ver. 2000 and did up grade to 2003. The old version worked just fine. The new version works also after I start the program.
1.On reboot of the computer, the "folder" that the nortin antivirus program
is in "opens" on my computer screen.
    2. Auto protect don't start up and does not appear in the icon is not in the start up
    tray.
    3. Once I open nortin antivirus and click on the auto protect to
engage it, THAT is when the popup ERROR (internal
program error #4002,519) comes up, although the
program will go ahead and load up, and the auto protect loads with
    icon in the tray.

I have been to the Nortin A.V. site and checked on the Q.& A. but, have not found the information about the #4002,519 error that I seem to have.

Once I get it all loaded, the email program works and it is scanning email that comes in and scans mail before it goes out. I tried the live update end of things and that also works.

It seems that once I have manually started the program it all works. But, each time the machine is turned off or rebooted, I have to go through the same thing again.

I have done all the usuall things, like un install and then re install.
I have added no new programs after Nortin A.V.
All programs on computer worked just fine before N.A.V. 2003 was added.
Thanks to anyone who can help me out.

You should report this problem in the discussion groups at Symantec.

Sometimes you have to aggressively follow up if you do not get a response quickly.

I am still posting, but, no one is answering. In fact there are many many others out there with the same problem. Seems to be some kind of "bug" in the program. I have been back to the site and searched through all the different things they say to do and did what they said, but, the problem is still there.
Guess I am one of many that will just half to wait to see what will happen.
I am trying to be an <img src=/S/angel.gif border=0 alt=angel width=15 height=21> through this mess and it is not easy!!!

Not a bad idea to post your inquiry here.... if it's a common problem, it's bound to crop up for somebody else, and possibly they'll be able to help you out.

Generally, non-Microsoft software doesn't get too much help from the lounge, but sometimes, you'll find your diamond, in our rough. I hope you're able to find your diamond, whether it be here, or out there.....

If a folder opens instead of the program running - I assume the program is in that folder - there probably is an error in the startup settings. Programs can run at startup either based on settings in the Windows Registry or as a result of a strategically placed shortcut.

Which version of Windows do you have? Each one seems to have a slightly different way to find out what your startup settings are. In Windows 98, you can use Start|Run... msconfig (I vaguely recall) to find a list, although I don't know if you can actually edit the entries there. Typically, though, the entry for Norton should show you where in the registry the path is set and assuming you know the name of the program, it should not be too difficult to change it. If you haven't been in the registry before, or even if you have, a backup is a good idea.

    Hello,
I am using Windows ME. Yes the program is in the folder that opens. I am not sure I know enough about the computer to go into the Reg. to change anything.

I did hear from the Nortin A.V. people as to what to do. I did what they said and the problem is still there. They are aware of it and say they are working on it. In the mean time I am still waiting to hear from them again as to maybe something else that I can try to correct the problem.

Thanks to all who have tried to help.

The front-line support personnell at Symantec weho moniitor those forums have historically been weak.
If enough people report a problem, it eventually gets resolved, but if you are the only one, or there are few, well, ....

And calling their tech support is not much better, not to mention they charge a minimum of $39.95.

Good, they've admitted the problem. Getting pat the fron-line was the challenge.

If the problem is caused by the virus definitions, you'll likele see a fix in the not too distant future if you just run LiveUpdate.
Updates are usually posted on Wednesdays.

If the problem is in the underlying software, a fix could be a long time forthcoming.

    Re: Nortin Antivirus 2003

    Hi tundra kid--
I have found posting at Symantec to be hit and miss--sometimes also you'll get an email answer from Symantec which may or may not nail the problem. But sometimes when it hasn't helped, what has helped is doing a search on their KB. I have fixed a couple problems that way--its a few clicks to get there--but once you do you may find the direct errors or the problem answered in a KB paper.

    Good luck,

    defrag

I don't use Norton AV so I can't say anything to help you, BUT you did say one thing that piqued my interest, regarding a Norton folder opening on the screen at startup. I've had that problem with at least two pieces of software running in Windows XP Pro, but never have experienced it on my Windows ME machine. In the case of my XP Pro machine, it started coincidentally enough, with McAfee Antivirus software when I first installed XP earlier this year. I ran MSCONFIG and looked under Startup to see if I could find what McAfee was running at startup and found one file that isn't needed in their system. When I un-checked that file, to stop it from running, the spurious window stopped opening. You might want to have a look in your Windows ME's MSCONFIG to see what entries you can pinpoint to Norton and see if you can do a little "detective" work. After all, if you turn something off you can always turn it BACK ON later.

    Re: Nortin Antivirus 2003

    Hi bigaldoc,
I did what you said, there is many many things in the start up area, but, nothing that I can see that pretains to the folder that opens on startup. All I am able to do is just wait until they "get it together & fix the problem". At least it does work just fine after I close the open window and manualy start the program and close the notice I get about the internal error. Then the program does work with no problems. Just a few extra steps I have to take until they fix the problem.
    Thanks for trying to help,
    Margo
