Security Forum

In the past Loungers including me have asked why there is no Virus Forum. Lounge Admin in the past has responded (if I represent it correctly) that there are plenty of other Net resources on Viruses in the wild (and I agree).

However, considering the extensive threads on a number of security and virus software issues in Software Wants and Needs, is it ime to consider a forum to discuss security issues. I imagine a Forum which would NOT announce or discuss specific viruses, but one where virus and firewall software, data recovery, file encryption, and such items could be discussed.

What is the feeling?

Re: Security Forum

I'd support Ken's suggestion of a broader "Security" forum. I get enough (too much, actually) info on viruses but understand not everyone is in the same boat.

Hi Granville

Actually, it was John's suggestion.....I was just agreeing with him.
Perhaps a Poll is called for......seems to me there's another thread in this Forum running a Poll.

... which is being underwhelmingly voted on. We have lower turnout here in the Lounge than a Florida Gubernatorial election (with apologies to <!rule=18>Rule 18<!/rule>)! I have voted in favor of an International Forum.

I'm interested in LoungeAdmin and more Mod comments before starting a poll. But I hafta say, if we can have a Cooking Forum, a Security Forum seems appropriate.

Re: Security Forum

I personally think that a 'Security' forum would be too broad. We already have more specific areas within which we can address our concerns, namely Software Finds, Hardware, Outlook, Internet Explorer, etc. I think that a well crafted WFOH statement could pretty much replace the need for a whole forum on security, if it linked to several virus watch websites.

Really, Security is relative. While it might be interesting to see a whole forum dedicated to the cause, nothing beats a solid Virus Scanner, and sound e-mail handling/browsing practices. I find that in most cases security is more an issue of Common Sense, and we all know that the topic in itself has generated quite a number of heated discussions between varing parties all over the lounge.

As much as I love this place, I almost feel that we're teetering on the edge of too many forums... that of course, is just my humble 2 cents...

Re: Security Forum

If we can have a cooking forum, then there's umpteen others that could be justified, but where do we stop?

A "Consumer Forum" would be useful for questions such as "What's the best type of [you fill it in]?"

Re: Security Forum

Hi John, I understand why you would put forward this idea, its a good one. My only concern is knowing previous topics relating to security and AV protection has started "product wars" between software products mentioned in such discussions. Since the moderators work hard on so many wonderful forums already, Id hate to contribute to their workload, I recall a particular discussion on AV software in Woddys recently, that had to be shut down because of this reason. Please don't clobber me for writing my thoughts..... You have some great ideas.

Re: Security Forum

I would agree with DarkRealm if John's original post related only to viruses and downloads, but..... as he suggested, there are many other concerns such as:data recovery, file encryption, restricted access, backup programs, backup storage (how many people store their backups in their desk drawer!!!) ,etc.

I also understand there are a lot of people voluteering their time and expertise to keep this website alive; much thanks to them. Then again, I doubt the Lounge got to be the Great resource it is without suggestions and debate such as John's post is generating.

Have a Great day!!!

Re: Security Forum

Hi John,
In principle I agree with you. Although Security per se is such a big topic it would need its own Lounge, not just a forum, I suspect most Loungers are using one of the more common virus checkers, firewalls etc. and it might be useful if people could share their experiences of configuration issues, version compatibility and the like. My only concern is that it can be very difficult to diagnose security issues without an awful lot of background information and the consequences of a misdiagnosis can be severe, but then I guess that's true of a lot of the posts in the Windows/hardware forums too!
I will draw it to the attention of the Powers That Be and see what they say...
Regards,
Rory

Re: Security Forum

Howdy

I was just checking Who's Online and of 12 Registered users, 3 were each on a separate board (IE, Win2000, Word) checking out a security related posting. Just before this, I found a thread in General Windows Solutions regarding Security to which I added a post.

Seems to me that there's a general interest in the subject, but you have to do a diligent search throughout the Lounge to find relevant postings....kind of like the "Yellow Pages" if you don't know what category somebody else has decided to slot your subject into.....good luck trying to find it!!!

Have a Great day!!!
