    All-purpose CD installation routine. (Word97/SR2)

From time to time the VBA developer is faced with the problem of installing a powerful application so simple that it runs as a Word template small enough to fit on a floppy, that will itself slip into a shirt pocket. Great for crossing the border.

However, no prospect is going to shell out a $50,000 p.a. license fee for a re-formatted floppy with a re-used adhesive label. Not even $CDN.

For $50,000 the prospect expects a

You have to go thru all that to make a sale? The client can't install the app themselves? Something's amiss...

    And WHAT is that userpic??

I've not flipped. Just sunk to new depths in dealing with Sales & Marketing types.

I'm ever-so-proud that the Document Cleanser, as an example, everything you need to convert & standardise 2,000,000 Wordperfect documents to MSWord, with all tables and code, fits on a 1.44MB floppy.

Clients aren't impressed with simplicty and conciseness. They want BIG and PONDEROUS.

Problem is, Howard says, despite the fact that my applications easily fit on a single 1.44MB floppy, we need to make the client THINK that the application is large, is hundreds of hours of development in C++ or VB6, and arrives on a CD.

So we need (!) a fake-installation routine that gives the APPEARANCE of installing from a CD, complete with DLL names (scrambled from actual names, that LOOK as if they might be real) and about a 2-minute run time.

Once the 2 minutes is up, the "installation" is complete, and we get on with what I'd brought in my shirt pocket.

And yes, I have self-installing routines that register the Utils.dot and anything else that's needed. (They mostly work until I make them "better"!).

S&M says "If we are installing software, it HAS to come on a CD". Whether we are present or not. For $50,000 client wants to see lots of DLLs being "loaded from" a CD.

If you have fired up the template, you will see that it doesn't matter what is ON the CD - could be Stravinsky's Rites Of Spring, for all that it matters. May as well listen to good music while you count dollars.

Also note an extremely useful byproduct of this approach - de-installing 237 non-existent DLLs is easy and foolproof.!

I thought you'd never ask. It's Perth W.A. by night. To see how isolated the city is, go to http://www.fourmilab.ch/cgi-bin/uncgi/Eart...img=learth.evif around Noon New York Time. and then click on the zoom OUT label to see what "isolated" means!

    I guess...

I would expect the customer to be more interested in, say, how well the conversion software worked,
rather than the presentation of the installation process. Shows you what I know.

Perth, W.A. Oh, yes. Isn't that the roof of the Burlesque Diner I see?

This Howard has never said what CG said that "Howard" said.
Perhaps he is referring to Ron Howard.
