HAGGIS!!

I know it's not Burns Night, but I feel like a haggis for dinner tonight. Luckily my local Sainsbury's supermarket sell them ready-to-cook, though they're not a patch on those found in Bonnie Scotland.

There is a recipe here for those who don't know the ingredients. As it says, those in the US may have to substitute some of them as the USDA has declared them "unfit for human consumption"

Dead easy to cook - boil or steam for an hour or so for one that serves 3-4 people. You can microwave the supermarket ones, but it's a wee bit sacreligous.

Serve with 'neeps and tatties (mashed turnips or swede and potatoes). I like to serve mine with a beef gravy, as it's a bit dry on it's own.

I have the best wife in the world - she loves the stuff. Even the cat gets a look in.

I agree that Haggis is wonderful - how come a country that exports such abysmal food can declare haggis unfit for human consumption is beyond me!

Neeps must be made with swede (the yellow turnip) and nutmeg added to this with the salt, pepper and butter is delicious.

However I am agahst at your suggestion of serving it with beef gravy - what do you think the Scots invented whisky for?

I'm now starting to think baaaad thoughts along the lines of Haggis Pie. Does such a thing exist? Either a kind of Shepherd's Pie affair or baked in a shortcrust pastry sort of thing. It must exist - I can't have thought of such an idea all on my own.

It is my understanding sausages, pies and burgers are traditionaly used to use up the bites left over after the choice bits are used, it is the same with nugets, reformed meat, chicken

Re: HAGGIS!!

There are some VERY interesting ways of using these leftover bits in other countries. I have encountered some very strange-looking bits in Asia. I find it best not to ask questions- just eat.

(Anyway, in the sort of places I prefer to eat in Asia, I could not ask questions unless I knew the local language. Just trying to order food by sign language is a great way to meet locals- and to get some EXCELLENT food).

Re: HAGGIS!!

Ordering in local restaurants with sign language works in Vegetarian restaurants too.
And you can be fairly sure that there won't be too many haggis ingredients in the meal

Personally, I'm semi-vegetarian.

I only eat the meat of vegetarian animals.
