Can't delete folders / files (Win XPP - sr1)

It's not a crisis but it does make me grind my teeth!

There are certain folders that WinXP will not let me delete and some certain files as well. As an example, I cannot delete the Crogram filesnetmeeting folder. I don't use the program, won't use the program and never will - I just want it gone! I am able to select all the files in that particular folder and delete them - but in a matter of seconds, they all re-materialize. I can't delete program filesoutlook express even though I don't use it and don't want it. I cannot delete program filesmsn gaming zone even after I used Add/Remove Programs | Windows Setup to remove all internet games form my system. The folder is now EMPTY and I am unable to remove it from my system.

Any ideas? I am the only user and I am the administrator on the system. This was not a problem last week; I just recently reinstalled XP and the new service pack. I just don't see a good reason to keep proggys on my system that I do not use. Also, don't like to clutter my Program Files directory with empty folders.

What do you use for a news reader if you go to newsgroups? If you use Outlook 97 or higher, it will use Express as the real reader.

Some other programs may need thes folder and the system will not allow them to bu deleted or they are in use. You state that you are the administrator, does this mean that you are logged as "The administrator" or a user with administrator permissions?

Also remember that Windows XP is a smart OS which can REPAIR itself at times.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

You're right about accessing newsgroups - that makes keeping Outlook Express a good idea. But it's still hard to figure why I cannot delete the MSN Gaming Zone folder. It is in the Program Files directory / folder. Within the MSN GZ folder, there is a subfolder; Windows. It's all empty - no files, no hidden files and no system files...but I still can't delete it from my system.

Administrator: My system doesn't boot to a logon selection screen. I am the only user and I am logged in automatically as the system administrator.

I eventually just changed the attributes on the unwanted folders to hidden so I won't have to be reminded that Microsoft is more in control of my computer than I am.

As a single user set up, you are logged in as "whoever" with admin permissions. If you check the "User accounts" with in the Control Panel, you will see the Administrator account I was talking about.

Ricky, Can you take ownership of the folder? In case you're not sure: Right click on the folder, select properties, click on Advanced, then Owner. That should display the users who can take ownership. Make your logon the owner. Click OK. Make sure that Full control, modify, and write are checked. You should be able to delete the folders.

Dave, I don't think I can really gain more access than I already have. I'm almost certain that everytime I crank up the machine, I am the Administrator (by default). The only other option in Control Panel | User Accounts is for a Guest and it's greyed out.

Since you are in the "Welcome Screen" mode, the Administrator account will NOT appear unless you have Tweak UI and have set the settings to display the Administrator accout in the Welcome Screen.

Another way is to Change the method of logging in to the NT method (by clearing the check mark in the "Use Welcome Screen), this way the system will remember the last logged in account name and then a password is needed. If you change to this mode, then you could type in "Administrator" as the account name and the the password that you gave at the time of system set up. If no password was given then just use the "Enter Key" as a password. You would NOW be logged in as the "Adminisrtator" not just an account with admin permissions.

Also if you look under "Documents and settings" you will see, "Administrator", "All Users", "Default User" and then your Ricky account(s). Each account will have a folder, and you will always see the first 3, they are system REQUIRED.

Note the following is from Help and support.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The Administrator account is the one you use when you first set up a workstation or member server. You use this account before you create an account for yourself. The Administrator account is a member of the Administrators group on the workstation or member server.

The Administrator account can never be deleted, disabled, or removed from the Administrators local group, ensuring that you never lock yourself out of the computer by deleting or disabling all the administrative accounts. This feature sets the Administrator account apart from other members of the Administrators local group.

Geez! - Bring back Dos 6.1

I do have TweakUI and I was able to tick the box so Admin would show on the Welcome screen. After grinding my teeth down to the gums, missing some valuable sleep and playing hookey from work, I was able to delete the folders...Whew

And just in time, I might add. Five more minutes and I was prepared to remove the hard drive - that would've got rid of the folder.

Now, if more people would read up on Windows XP, the accounts have or are explained in all of the books I have seen on NT, 2K and XP. It is a new OS from the 9x world and people just need to and one may learn a lot. I can NOT blame MS, I put more of the blame on the OEm's and their ads and sales hipe. And second, on the W9x users who think they do NOT need to .

Yep! I agree.

Beginning in the DOS days, you could look forward to regular new releases that provided small incremental-style upgrades. Then when Windows entered the scene, again, every new version simply provided a handful of useful new features. Only occasionally, did an upgrade represent a "new" starting point.

Upgrading from Win3.11 to Win95 was a huge change, but everyone knew it was - there were very few similarities.
The upgrade from Win98 to WinXP is also substantial but initially (for me) it wasn't so apparent. I must admit I thought the upgrade would simply provide a few new features and enhancements. I couldn't have been more wrong, it's a "new" OS.

I very much appreciate the good folks of The Lounge who come through day in and day out with simple solutions to difficult problems.
