Java Applet Security Update (WinXP Pro SP1)

I noticed on the Windows update site today there is a "Critical Update" that purportedly resolves the "Java Applet" vulnerabilities in Microsoft Virtual Machine...

When we started using XP, one of the interesting things was that it did not support Java very well and we went to the Sun site to get a Java capability going. With that in mind, I'm not sure what the heck Microsoft is talking about....

Does anyone here have any thoughts on this little item?

Thanks a lot for any clarification.

MS started making their own Java VM available again with the release of XP SP-1. The patch is to fix problems in it not the Sun version. Sun is responsible for their own version.

    Bob,
A correction is do, you stated "did not support Java very well ", well XP has supported Java since day one with out any problems. MS just removed their Virtual Machine (VM) from the download site. The VM is MS's version of the Java interface that needs to be on ones machine to use Java code. This was because of the court action with Sun. The VM was always at MS sites, it just got moved so one had to find it to install it. It was NOT the default source, since Sun felt that it should have a share of the pie. <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>

    I see found then fix.
    See http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/...in/MS02-052.asp

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Re: Java Applet Security Update (WinXP Pro SP1)

    Hi Dave,
I have always been somewhat confused by the JAVA business on XP. One thing I do know is that when I first started using XP, a credit union banking site I use stopped working until I installed the Sun Java. What I actually installed was JavaTM 2 SDK, Standard Edition Version 1.3.1. Now, that I do have WinXP SP1, I'm wondering if I don't need the Sun Java VM any more? Just wondering. Any thoughts would be gratefully received... <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    Thanks a lot!

Bob, That depends on the version of Java written for in the applet. I think the MS VM is 1.1.7 (or maybe even earlier). So, if the applet uses newer features included in 1.3.1 you'd still need the Sun VM. MS can not upgrade their Java version. They can only maintain it.
