    Lost Page File (WinXP Home)

Well, here is my latest weird problem.
At start-up I get the following message:
"Limited Virtual Memory. Your system has no paging file, or the paging file is too small." And it proceeds to tell me to go to, control panel, advanced, performance, settings, advanced, custom size and enter an initial or max page file size.
I have tried this MANY times and it seems to accept it OK, but on the next boot, there is the same message Again! I have tried putting the page file on my C. D, or both drives with the same result. ( while I have 512mb of RAM, it doesn't seem to affect the operation of anything, since it probably doesn't need to dip into the pagefile much or at all)
I have looked this up on MSKB and they describe the system symptoms to a tee on Q315270, BUT it refers NTSF volumes, While I have both HD's with FAT 32??
    No NTFS!
It says: Cause: " The error message may occur if Windows tries to create a paging file on an NTFS volume, but the System and Administrators accounts do not have the correct NTFS permissions on the volume." It goes on to give a lenghty resolution to this BUT without NTFS, I don't even have some of those settings they mention! <img src=/S/hairout.gif border=0 alt=hairout width=31 height=23>
I have rolled back WinXp SP1, reinstalled XP, tried it without SP1(same thing) reinstalled SP1, (still the same problem)! I just can't get the pagefile.sys, back in place!
OK guys, what do you think?

Bob, You may a corrupted pagefile. Try setting the min & max sizes to 0. Then reboot your system. Delete all occurrences of pagefile.sys (one per drive you've coonfigured). These are hidden files so you'll have to be sure the windows explorer is set to display them. Reset the pagefile size to the MS recommendations for manual settings - min = 1.5 times RAM max = 3 times RAM. Re-boot. You should have new pagefile(s).

    Good luck,
    Joe

    Joe,
I did try that before, but I did reattempt to create the pagefile as you you suggested. Still NG. I also did a complete search on C&D drives including system and hidden files and made sure that I was showing them in Explorer. They weren't there at all. Nada!
SOMETHING is keeping me from creating the pagefiles!! Tried using system and custom settings also. When I hit the set button, it appeared that they were being set up, but not really doing it.

Bob, Seems like something may have corrupted the security access for your drives. If you right click on the drive and select security is 'system' in the box? If not, add it. I'm pretty sure that many XP functions need system to have access to your HDs.

Re: Lost Page File (WinXP Home)

Joe, It took a while to get ready to answer this post but I was VERY busy!
I did check for security in the system box but greyed out. Then bad started to go to worse. In addition to the loss of the page files, I then started to get an error message when restarting the system (driver_power_state_failure) which told me I also had a driver problem. Then on reboot I was getting a message that a NVxxxx file was attempting to access memory improperly!
Believe it or not, I was still able to OK these things and keep running! But I decided enough was enough, it was time for the "big eraser". I had a good recent backup, so I blew away the C: partition, repartitioned and reformatted the C: and installed XP clean and fresh, then ran Xp Sp 1(which I had downloaded and saved previously). All now is acting normally and all I have to do is reinstall my apps and settings, the way I want them.
What a fiasco! I guess, all's well that ends well. This should keep me busy for a while. It would be nice to really know what was going on here though.
    Thanks for your input, Joe.
