PAGEREF to bookmark in text box (Word 2000 SR-1)

When I insert a cross-reference link (PAGEREF) to a bookmark inside a text box, the link works OK but the page number shown is incorrect.

I would appreciate any suggestions for displaying the actual page number of the text box containing the bookmark.

    Thanks,

I don't know of any way around that problem other than to use a table cell instead of a text box. Do you have a good reason for wanting the elements inside a Text Box rather than a Table cell?

Text boxes also cause problems if you want the TOC to include something from inside a text box.

    Andrew,
    Thanks for your reply.
The text boxes are callouts on diagrams. The PAGEREFs are links to words in the callouts from an index.

    Oh dear, in that case I think you may be hosed <img src=/S/hosed.gif border=0 alt=hosed width=73 height=24>

I think you are doing it the RIGHT way and getting stung by a bug.
Converting the text box to a Frame removes the problem but that is not much help if you are using a Non-rectangular callout.

A possible change in methodology is called for.
What about bookmarking the diagram or something else on the same page (not floating) though and using that bookmark for the page reference?

I think I am right in saying that Indexing, Fields and TOC's do not recognise the contents of a Text Box or Autoshape as these are floating objects. That is why 'Frames' were retained to communicate their contents with the rest of the document.

Re: PAGEREF to bookmark in text box (Word 2000 SR-1)

I did consider bookmarking the titles of diagrams and linking the index entries to those bookmarks, but all of the other index links go directly to the index word and I would like to keep this consistency.

I think I will insert a HYPERLINK field in those index entries that reference bookmarks inside a text box and manually enter the page number in the hyperlink. This means that I will have to check/update about 20 hyperlinks each time I edit the document, but I think it is worth that effort to maintain consistency in the links.

It still amazes (and disappoints) me that Word can link correctly to a bookmark inside a text box, but can't figure out the page number!

    Thanks for the help.

Can't you combine these two ideas,

Insert a HYPERLINK field in those index entries that reference bookmarks inside a text box and enter the page number in the hyperlink as a cross reference to something on the same page that will move with the text box.

Re: PAGEREF to bookmark in text box (Word 2000 SR-1)

Great idea! I did not think of nesting the PAGEREF field code inside a HYPERLINK field code.

I inserted a PAGEREF to the title of the diagram containing the text box, selected the PAGEREF field and inserted a HYPERLINK to the bookmark inside the text box. The PAGEREF displays the correct page number of the diagram and updates correctly when I add or subtract pages. When I click on the HYPERLINK field that overlays the PAGEREF field, it links to the bookmark inside the text box. Exactly what I wanted!

Unfortunately when I convert the Word file to PDF (using Adobe Acrobat PDFMaker) the PDF links to the title of the diagram instead of the bookmark inside the text box. I think this may be caused by the order that PDFMaker processes the nested field codes.

Anyway, thanks to your help I am one step closer to a solution. I will let you know if I find a workaround for the PDF file (even though that does not really belong in this forum).
