Re: Woody's new 'sniffer' not sniffing! (Word 97)

Just starting with the obvious... does it properly detect fields in the body, or does it just not do anything at all?

On my Office 2000 system, it doesn't seem to have joined the add-ins collection yet (even though I can see the DLL in the new folder). Maybe I have to restart? Maybe I'll try that later.

Update: I guess it's an invisible add-in; the item on the Tools menu is there!

Update #2: Mine didn't find it, either. It doesn't appear to be sniffing beyond the headers in Section 1. This is a common issue in Word macros that use the ActiveDocument.StoryRanges collection to scan a document. Many of the StoryRanges do in fact cover the entire document, but the ones relating to headers and footers do not read past the first break in the "Link to Previous" chain. In many documents, this is sufficient, as the section breaks are not used to create different headers and footers, but a macro looking for spyware should check for that.

I'm only speculating that this limitation, which was in my original FieldSniffer example, is the culprit. Perhaps it is something more subtle? Anyway, I'm sure a new version will be posted soon! It reminds me of that expression: "You can tell who the pioneers are by the arrows in their backs."

Not only does it sound like Woody, or whomever developed the add-in, should've ran the code by you guys first, but "Wait for the next version" sounds a bit like Microsoft - eh? LOL

Assuming I'm right about the problem, I guess it's my fault for not actually coding it up in the original version (rather than just mentioning the problem in a comment). <img src=/S/doh.gif border=0 alt=doh width=15 height=15> A huge amount of stuff was added by Claude and Mike Craven, and maybe others, to address even more obscure issues, but some of the original plumbing apparently was not revisited under enough test conditions. We'll have to make sure to include you on the beta team next time. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

An alternative hidden file detector can be found at wordsite.com

Okay, here's another one for you.

The attached file has an IncludeText field in Header. However the 1 page document has a blank Different First Page header. Woody's sniffer will detect the field but if I didn't know where it was how would I know where look for it??

P.S. Try the attachment at your own risk - I just found using the sniffer on this file caused random crashes.

    Thanks for this link!

I just downloaded it and will "give it a whirl".

I'd be glad to report what I find but I hesitate considering that I am in one of Woody's groups!

I understand the scenario, but I think I'll pass on playing with the file. When field codes are displayed, you can find them by using ^d as your search string. To find only INCLUDETEXT fields, you can search for includetext. I agree that this is not obvious. This should work in your document.

I think it's germane. Please feel free to post your comments.

I have to agree that Bill Coan's "sniffer" on Wordsite seems better, at least for this file.

I don't blame you for not wanting to open the attachment. I didn't discover the crashing problem until after I posted.

You can reproduce the document easily so you can see what I'm talking about:

    1. Create a new file
    2. Insert a page break
    3. Create a different first page header in Page Setup
    4. In the regular header insert an IncludeText field. You can use Insert --> File and tick Link to file
    5. Delete the page break
    6. Run the sniffer

The find was a good idea but it doesn't find the field either.

Re: Woody's new 'sniffer' not sniffing! (Word 97)

Nothing against Woody and everyone else that worked on the sniffer, but Mr. Coan's detector is more user-friendly and stable. It contains the ability to Go To the field, it includes a description and location, it didn't crash Word and it appears to find all fields in a document in any location. It also appears to find any field that could potentially be used in the same manner.

I noticed Woody endorsed Mr. Coan's Hidden File Detector. Maybe they should combine efforts. Microsoft doesn't seem to be doing anything about the problem and isn't developing a stable utility what it's all about anyway?

The word is out on this problem and now is the time we should protect ourselves and use a reliable utility.

The scenario you described works fine in Word 2000 on Windows 2000. Meaning it doesn't crash; you still don't have an easy way to view the page 2 header when there is no page 2.

    > The find was a good idea but it doesn't find the field either.

After you get the alert, it works. Otherwise, you need to toggle field codes to viewable (Alt+F9) first, before running the Find.

You're right. <!post=Please take a look here,183056>Please take a look here<!/post>, and, please, uninstall FieldSniffer.
    Cheers, Claude.
