Can Not Update to IE6 SP1 (Win ME)

I've updated to IE6 SPI a Win98 Se Laptop without any problem.

But I can not update IE 6 for my WinMe desktop. When I try from Internet with Windows Uptade, i recive this message "Setup unable to install all components. Could not be installed because of unknown error".

I've cleared all cache files, download all files and tried without any running program and also in Safe Mode.
Not any change. The installation do not succeed !!!

A quick search for any updated log file show me that "setupapi.log" is updated each try.

I'll post here the last log.
Can somebody help me to decrypt this log or have a suggestion.

Sounds pretty messed up. I am not sure you can find a simple solution.

I would delete EVERYTHING in the MSDOWNLOAD.TMP and the WINDOWSTEMP folders for starters. The, try to do a full download and install -- as opposed to the "Web installation'. For WinME, this option should still work.

If that does not work, you seem to have a problem with your Certificate processing?? And "unsigned or incorrectly signed file" implies that Windows is checking the Certificates of downloaded files to make sure they come from the correct source. I must say, I have never seen this occur during the installation of an update before...

Re: Can Not Update to IE6 SP1 (Win ME)

    Thanks for your reponse.

I already have tried with the full set of files as opposed to the "web installation" without succes!!

Now to be sure, I've once again I've just dowloaded a new set of (IE6 SP1) files, deleted all items in the MSDOWNLOAD.TMP and the WINDOWSTEMP folders.
Start without any active programs (disable NAV 2002, ZA Pro 3.0, etc..) just have Explorer and Systray remaining active in in the program windows.
And trying again.! No change, just the same message "Setup was unable to install all components. Please close all applications and try running Setup again.
I've have tried in Safe Mode too !! :-(

About the Certificate processing?? I don't understand, I've buy and install a Official OEM Windows Me 18 months ago. And I've upgrated to IE5.5, IE5.5 SP2 and IE6 without any troubles ??

I'm already searching for 1 week !! Does have some body any ideas ??

Re: Can Not Update to IE6 SP1 (Win ME)

    Wild shot here...any screensavers, Active Desktop? Power Management...told you I was just wild guessing here, scheduled tasks running... <img src=/S/scratch.gif border=0 alt=scratch width=25 height=29> ... anything to do with the BIOS <img src=/S/brickwall.gif border=0 alt=brickwall width=25 height=15>. ?
I don't know what to say... I have WinME and had no problems whatsoeverwith that SP1 installation.

Only other thing that I can think of is corrupted IE6.0 .dlls ,etc. Not too sure on this - Mods, need help here with correct data, please -, but if you could uninstall the IE 6.0 (ie6setup.exe), reboot, then re-install that again, reboot, then go to the update site and install the SP1? I remember when I had IE5.5 and IE6.0 came out, there were plenty of people having the 'incomplete d/l of all components' problems, and the fix was to uninstall IE6.0 completely, then d/l it again. Maybe this is like that?

Somebody MUST know the answer to this...even if what I have suggested is a somewhat 'round-the-bend' type of suggestion...maybe something in there, somewhere?

Re: Can Not Update to IE6 SP1 (Win ME)

There are some rather complicated looking instructions here -- that pertains to Win2K installing sound/video game controllers -- but the warning messages at the bottom is similar. Note their response:

"These error messages are expected because you are no longer using signed files, and are also logged in the Setupapi.log file."

I am not exactly sure how to use that information to your advantage...
    _____________________________

Another MSKB link also regarding Win2K has this to say about those messages:

"This behavior occurs because the Update.inf file is not digitally signed. This is an informational statement you can ignore."
    _____________________________

Strangly, I do not find that file (Setupapi.log) on my Win98 computer. Microsoft has a document discussing that file here. Again, they talk about it for the Win2K operating system.

A Google Search of "munged cmdline" is mostly un-helpful -- except for that Win2K document.

A Google Search of Setuapi.log also seems to imply this is file is only for Win2K/XP.

This may be way off base, but are you installing the WinME or the Win2K version of IEsp1 -- or is there even a difference??

I must say, your problem is very unique....

Re: Can Not Update to IE6 SP1 (Win ME)

    I've tried everything you've suggested without success. <img src=/S/disappointed.gif border=0 alt=disappointed width=15 height=15>

    Also, I've download all IE6SP1 files from MS site and YES, I've select de WinME version. <img src=/S/mad.gif border=0 alt=mad width=15 height=15>

Now, I'll try your previous suggestion and completely de-install IE6, reboot, re-install, reboot end try again with the update SP1

I don't understand what kind of "unsigned or incorrectly signed file" I'm missing . In MS support, any reference to that or "Munged cmdline" or "Error 0x800b0003" is for W2k. <img src=/S/crazy.gif border=0 alt=crazy width=15 height=15>

    I'll post again after this test. <img src=/S/thankyou.gif border=0 alt=thankyou width=40 height=15>

    Update succeed <img src=/S/cool.gif border=0 alt=cool width=15 height=15>

Well, it was not possible to de-install IE6 in WinME.
Then I've tried to "repair IE6". No change, IE6 refuse to upgrade to IE6_SP1.
My next try was to re-install WinMe onto my existing configuration.
After the re- installation, IE was down-graded to version 5.5. Then I try to
