    no taskbar buttons

A colleague called with a question that has me stumped. No buttons for running programs appear in her taskbar. For example, if Outlook is open, there is no Inbox or other Outlook button showing in the taskbar. When she minimizes the open program, there is no way to maximize it again except by opening it with the start menu. Rebooting does not help. Other items in the taskbar -- the start button, the quicklaunch toolbar, and the system tray -- are all still there. She also reports that she had the following error message some time after this problem started: "Explorer has caused an error in csbho.dll. Explorer will not close." This may or may not be related. I searched the MS KB and all I could come up with was Q139272, which is not relevant.

    Any ideas?

    Hi Fafner

Has she installed PC Magazine's "Tray Magician"? If so, That could explain the problem (see Q280316).

    Have a Great day!!!

    Re: no taskbar buttons

I'd double-size that taskbar to see if somehow, the portion that displays active application windows has gotten hidden. Have her drag the taskbar and double or triple size it to find out. csbho.dll appears to be part of Comet Cursor, something I would remove yesterday if it's installed. I doubt that it's the cause of the problem....but you never know.

    Re: no taskbar buttons

Thanks for identifying that dll, Mark. I had already had her try to drag the bar wider, but that did no good. This morning she uninstalled Comet Cursor and at first it didn't help, but then suddenly the taskbar started working normally again, she reports. I just called her again, and it is still working. So far, so good. If the problem recurs, I'll post again. Thanks.

    Re: no taskbar buttons

Unfortunately, the problem has returned this morning. There wre no error messages, just no buttons on the taskbar. She removed Comet Cursor, so that is apparently not the problem. I'm hoping that someone has more ideas. Has anyone seen this problem before?

Have her send a screen shot that you can post, so we can see what has happened.

What "Buttons" are you (her) expecting to be there and where?

    Re: no taskbar buttons

I will try to get her to send me a screen shot. But the situation is simple to explain. When an application is open -- let's say for example that Outlook is open to the Inbox -- there should be a button on the taskbar that has the Outlook icon and that says Inbox - Microsoft Outlook. But there is not. Nothing. Nada. So she can't use the mouse to switch between open application windows, because there is nothing to click. If she minimizes the window, it disappears completely, even though Task Manager says the program is still running.

    Re: no taskbar buttons

OK, here is a screen shot. The clogged system tray and quick launch tool bar are distracting (after she sent me the shot, I helped her remove shortcuts from the quick launch toolbar that she never uses), but note that while Internet Explorer is open, there is no button for it on the taskbar. If she minimizes IE in this case, it completely disappears, even though it remains open,. Task Manager will show that it is open even though the taskbar doesn't show it.

IT appears that she has the "Systray" defined as the full width. Have her drag the vertical bar on the right of the Quiick Launch icons to the right and see if the task buttons appear.

    Re: no taskbar buttons

We have tried that. I also had her remove the Quick Launch completely (right-clicking on the taskbar and removing the check from the Quick Launch selection of the toolbar menu).

Tell me what you mean by defining the Systray as full width. I have never used WinME myself, so if there are settings unique to Windows 9x systems, I may not be familiar with them. Is there anything we can play with there?

What's the little icon I've attached below?
If the user has dual-screen ability, the taskbar icons only show up in one of the screens, I believe. . .

That's the touchpad icon (this is a laptop). The three elements of the icon light up to show contact with the touchpad and the right and left click buttons. There is only one screen.

    Hi Fafner,
Does she have any other tool bars active? The vertical bars on the left of each tool bar can be 'grabbed' and slid to the left or right to size a tool bar. If she has another tool bar active it could be that is is taking over. I'd have thougth that making the taksbar double size would have taken care of it.

    Re: no taskbar buttons

No. No other toolbars are active. In fact, since the screen shot, she also removed the quick launch bar by right-clicking on the taskbar and unchecking it from the context menu. So now the only things showing on the taskbar are the start button and the systray. And nothing else shows up when she doubles or triples the taskbar.
