importing dbase files to Access97 (97)

i'm having some trouble importing dbase files into access. I have ArcInfo tables that I am converting to a dbase file with ArcView. Access 97 will import these files, but the field definitions are sometimes redefined. For example I have one field that is defined as an integer with no decimal places, Access97 converts this to 'number' with 'Auto' for decimal places. Similarly, fields that are defined as floating point to two decimal places are converted to 'number' with 'Auto' for decimal places.

Is there any way to avoid this problem?

    AFAIK there is not.
What you could do is to import the DBase file into a table, then use an Append query to append this data to a table where your fields are as you want them.

Do you know the table structure you need? If so, create an Access table with the field definitions you want and import the dbase file into that.
