Documents VERY slow to open (Word 2000)

We have created documents in Word XP with a template. This calls a .dot in the Users My Documents folder. Something like serveruserMyDocumentsStandardLetter.dot. The documents contain lots of field codes. The problem is that when the document is opened on a different computer network with Word 2000, it can take a few minutes to open.

Eventually we found that if the reference to the template is removed in Templates and Add-ins, the document would open INSTANTLY in Word 2000.

The silly thing about all this, is that it only started to happen this week, no settings have been changed anywhere. This means all the documents we have saved that were created on the Word XP machine take forever to open in Word 2000 whilst the machine looks for this non-existent server.

Has anyone ever had this problem before?

As an extreme measure, we could create a macro that strips the reference to the server before it is sent to the Word 2000 machines, but what to do with all the XP created documents sitting there that we now cannot read (well, we can if we wait).

    Ideas anyone???

Do you use WINS? If you create a static mapping of the nonexistent server name to a real server, perhaps Word 2000 will determine more quickly that it cannot find the template.

You know, this sounds very, very familiar. If you search back during the past few months, I think someone else ended up with the same problem after renaming their server. Unfortuantely I can't recall their solution.

One workaround that may get you faster access is to ensure that there is a template with that name in your Word User Templates directory. Of course you have to know the template name in advance but if you have a whole host of files in the same boat it can save a lot of time for opening subsequent files.

The template doesn't have to BE the same as the attached template, just have the same name and be residing in the directory that Word looks for templates in.

Alternatively, you could put the file on your local hard disk, disconnect the network (physically), open the file and then reconnect the network. If Word can't see the template the file opens instantly. The problem arises when Word can see the template off in the distance and it takes a while to copy it locally.

Re: Documents VERY slow to open (Word 2000)

Just wanted to add a note to this saying that this tip has saved my sanity. Got a file server which has been painfully slow when opening Word documents. I've had the users on my back for weeks moaning and as a last resort, after trying all sorts of other tricks, I searched the Lounge and found this. As a result of adding a static mapping for our old server name to the new server address people have (and this took me by surpise!) been ringing to tell me how speedy things are. I can't thank you enough!
