Xp folder refreshing (Xp Pro service pack 1)

When dealing with network drives, xp does not seem to refresh files after you modify them. An example is, if im on a network drive and right click and select new folder then it does make the folder, it doesnt show up! I have to manually click view and refresh before it will appear. Then right click on it and go to rename. This is only doing this on a new xp system. Is there a system service or something else that can be done to make it work like its supposed too ?

We are experiencing a similar problem. If I go to a mapped network drive, right click in the window and choose New--Folder, the folder appears but is named New Folder. It does not let me type a name for it immediately. Instead, I now must right click the "New Folder" and choose rename. This is occurring on all of our current Win XP Pro systems (5 total computers). We are on a Windows 2000 network and have Office XP SR2 loaded. It only seems to happen on Network drives.

Anyone have any suggestions??

Do you have a hosts file in your network set up?

I'm not on a network at home, but with a similar setup at work I had similar problems. So, from memory:
In your TCP/IP settings in your network settings, I think under Advanced, find the link to the Hosts file and edit it. Open it with Notepad if it doesn't give you an easy option:
It will look something like

>>>
# Copyright 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost
>>>

Simply add the IP addresses of your server and workstations with their names.
e.g.
198.164.254.1 our_server
198.164.254.10 workstation_10

Reboot.
