    Space bar deleting

This is probably a dumb question, but every so often one of our users accidently changes their spacebar so that it deletes the previous character. The only way we have to stop it is to reboot the workstation. Does anyone know what causes this and how to undo it. Thanks.

The cause might be something else completely, but you can check the following:

If the user inadvertently hits the Insert (or Ins) key, typing mode switches from insert to overtype. It's actually a toggle, so striking the Insert key again switches back to insert.

Microsoft Word displays the typing mode in the status bar. If OVR is black (not greyed out), typing mode is overtype.

    Thanks for the note.

Unfortunately, that's not the solution. In our case, the space bar deletes the previous character, not the next one, when you hit the space bar -- in essence, it becomes the backspace key. I've experimented with different keyboard combinations to try to recreate the problem, but without success.

Is this happening in all applications - i.e. not just MS Office - as if the delete key had literally been re-mapped to the spacebar?
Does the Delete key doing anything new?

Yes, it does happen in other applications. I don't know if the delete button does anything different -- didn't think to check it, but I will the next time this occurs
