    Windows Hangs

    Having a problem with a computer. It's a Celeron 466, on a Asus ME-99 motherboard with Award Bios v6.0 with 256mB RAM. The computer started running very slow a couple of months ago and has gotten progressivley slower, (30 seconds before the start up screen comes up and shows the Bios version and says "Press <Del> to enter setup). Now when it finally gets to the Win 98 screen it hangs and wont go any further. Any help on either of these problems would be great.

    Thanks

    Aron

    Many things come to mind, but have you tried:

    * Defragging the hard drive.
    * Running a spyware detection and cleaning program such as Ad-Aware (www.nusoft.com).
    * Running a registry repair/cleaning program such a WinDoctor included with Norton Utilities.
    * Running Microsoft RegClean, included with the free Microsoft Power Toys utilities package.

    If you surf the Internet frequently, I suspect running a spyware cleaning program will take care of a lot of your problem. It sounds like you have many background processes running, most likely the result of spyware intrusion. Go to www.nusoft.com (or do a Google search for Ad-Aware), install it, and run it. It'll probably clean out a lot of unwanted stuff.

    Good luck!

    <P ID="edit" class=small>(Edited by mikemay on 14-Oct-02 21:50. )</P>Microsoft no longer has RegClean on its web site, but you can get RegClean 4.1a from other folks who have posted it. Just run a search in Google (or your favorite search engine). A couple of other utilities that claim registry-cleaning functionality are referenced at http://is-it-true.org/nt/atips/atips53.shtml. It's a good idea to back up your registry before running it.

    I meant to add that there is some user commentary on RegClean at http://download.com.com/3302-2094-881470.html?tag=mta. You might consider the comments before proceeding.

    Edited by WyllyWylly to add URL code. See the Quick Guide.[/i] <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

    The Ad-Aware site is incorrect in one of the posts. They have many sites http://www.lavasoftusa.com works and http://www.lavasoft.de, both are in English and you can download a free version of the software
