    Missing Outlook features (Office XP)

I am switching to Outlook as an email client after using Netscape Mail. I am missing two features that might make me want to go back.

First, in Netscape, I can read message headers without opening the messages. That allows me to delete or move spam or other suspicious email. In Outlook "Inbox" (and "Deleted Items"), I cannot do that. The selected message is always displayed and I cannot delete one without it coming up. Interestingly enough, this does not happen this way in "Outbox" or "Sent Items". Is there a way to set the Inbox so that I just see the message headers and can click on one to open it? I don't want to open the message just to delete it, etc.

Second, In Netscape I can right click on a web link in order to open it in a new file. This allows me to leave currently open browser windows alone. Outlook does not seem to allow this. There are many times that I would like to open a new browser window in Outlook without destroying the one that I already have open.

Is there a way to do these things? A setting that I can't find? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

You can turn off the preview pane - and to delete mail without sending it to deleted folder, hold shift and delete.

Outlook doesn't support the browser option on a right click menu, but if you hold shift and click it should open a new browser if you are reusing windows. I prefer to set IE to always open new windows.

I like the shift-delete trick. That will be useful for large attachment emails I know I won't need to keep.

I am unable to make the shift-click trick work to open a web page in a new IE window. I noticed a setting in IE6 under the advanced tab that says "reuse windows for launching shortcuts" which is checked. I also tried ctrl-click and alt-click without success. I, too, am using Outlook 2002.

I still use IE 5.5, but I can't imagine they removed "Open in New Window" from the right-click menu. Do you have a customized version of IE?

    Afterthought: I'm sorry, if you meant right-clicking the link inside a mail message, never mind. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Turning off the preview pane is EXACTLY what I wanted. Thanks. I did not find that when I was looking at all of the settings.

Also, thanks for the tip on shift-delete, but I am not trying to avoid the "Deleted Items" folder, only the forced preview.

AND, the shift-click trick worked. You have solved both issues. Thanks.

Another missing feature that I miss is that Outlook XP will not use nicknames to resolve email addresses. So, for example, if I enter "dad" which is entered in my dad's nickname field, OL does not find it. Very frustrating when used to OL98 andOL2K having it.

look on the view menu - you toggle it from that menu.

No - nicknames work fine on my enterprise version of OL2K at work - I use them all the time - and the internet version at home wooks as well too - what's irritating with OLXP is there is still a Nickname field in contacts. As far as the view menu, what were you referring to?
