Document Collaboration Spyware Frenzy (W97 SR-2 Spanish)

    Hi to everyone.

    I am using W97 SR-2 (Spanish Ver.).

I downloaded the Hidden File Detector the last WOW mentioned, and though I thought it wouldn't work (presumably it would scan for field names in English) it did great (as far as I've tested).

To my surprise those fields in English in the sample file (SPYWAR~1.doc, the one bundled along with the HFD setup) were converted to file names in Spanish, which makes me think fields' codes go even a little beyond their names - maybe another code in the background.

    Ok, to the point:

    1) I did create a file named "Mxyztplk.doc" and saved to the C: root directory, which is the file the field code in the sample file is supposed to go grab without your noticing.

    2) I opened the sample file. It took a while for word to update the fields, just like when there was no Mxyztplk.doc file in C:.

    3) Now, the question: how do I know whether SPYWAR~1.doc sucked in Mxyztplk.doc? I searched for the latter's content in the former, but to no avail. Couldn't find a thing. When I close SPYWAR~1.doc, it doesn't even prompt me to save changes, as if no changes were made.

Maybe this does have to do with the Spanish ver, maybe I'm not checking things right... Where should the info appear? In the footer, right by the field? Or is it supposed to be fetched with some kind of editor...?

    Any thoughts? <img src=/S/scratch.gif border=0 alt=scratch width=25 height=29>

    TIA

Try using the "Recover text from any document (*.*)" option as your file type. (I don't know the name in Spanish, sorry.)

In Word, File | Open... then in the lower drop-down list of file types, scroll down and look for the above filter.

By the way, once you set this filter, it stays until you change it back to Word Document, so if files start to open very oddly, double-check that you changed it back.

If your version of Word doesn't have this option, you can use WordPad or Notepad.

When you "Go to" a hidden file, HFD automatically turns on the field code responsible for hiding the file (assuming a field code is involved). To turn off the field code and view the "results," which should appear at the same location as the field code, press Shift+F9. Or press Alt+F9 to toggle field codes on or off throughout the entire document.

    Hi jscher,

I've been a little short of time at the office and also will be on Monday. I don't want to delay the response so much, so I'll tell you what I got so far.

First, the option you mention does exist in the Spanish ver as well. I used it, but nothing. Notepad and Wordpad weren't of any help either.

Then, I played a little with SPYWAR~1.DOC. I went to the footer, forced Word to display field codes (Alt+F9), and once there, forced Word to convert the field code to its result (Ctrl+Shift+F9). I don't remember exactly the outcome, but in some point it went "Error when opening the file!" or something.
The field code does point to the C: root, and I think it's correct (it even has the double-dash stuff for field codes - besides, a zillion WOWsers woulda noticed before me if it were wrong). The name of the file is also right ("Mxyztplk.doc" courtesy of the copy/paste feature of course).

Hope someone can make something out of this. As for me, it seems I'll keep scratching my head till tuesday... <img src=/S/scratch.gif border=0 alt=scratch width=25 height=29>

    Enjoy the weekend

Re: Document Collaboration Spyware Frenzy (W97 SR-2 Spanish)

    Hi,

After my last post I took some time to install HFD at home (Office 2000 in Spanish). Surprisingly it didn't work either. I revised carefully the word documents both at the office and at home, and forcing word to display fields results (Ctrl+Shift+F9) field by field, found the following:

    - Both of the DATE fields worked ok.
    - The IF field enclosing the DATE fields also worked ok. It returned the path to the document to absorb, c:mxyztplk.doc
    - Now, the INCLUDETEXT field enclosing the mentioned IF field returns something like "Error! Impossible to open the file."
    - Lastly, the IF field enclosing the INCLUDETEXT field returns nothing. I don't understand the syntax of this last IF field, but I guess it is returning the "" string.

So, as far as I see, the problem is either with the INCLUDETEXT field or with the name and path of the c:mxyztplk.doc file. I triple checked and the file name and path are correct. Maybe the conversion to the Spanish version messed up the code... I dunno.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks
