View as a slide show (XPP)

    1) The system folder named 'My Pictures' should have 'View as slide show' in the left-hand window pane under 'Picture Tasks' but my machine has just the standard 'File and Folder Tasks' of other folders and no option to view as slide show. It does appear properly in all other directories that are located in that folder, but not the 'My Pictures' folder. The other two machines do have the 'Picture Tasks' and slide show option on equivalent folder. Is there a manner in which to enable this feature or a reg hack to get in in line?

    2) Are there any mechanisms by which one can modify the length of time files are viewed during the 'View as slide show' presentation?

For #1, check to make sure that the folder is the right type. From Explorer, click on Tools - Options - Customize This Folder and make sure that Photo Album is selected. You can also apply it to all subfolders.

#2, dunno. I would think so, but I poked around a little and came up dry.

Do you mean 'Tools'>'Folder options' from Explorer? There doesn't seem to be 'Customize this folder' in that menu. If you right-click on a folder and select 'Properties'>'Customize' tab there is the 'What kind of folder do you want' selection box, but the customize tab does not seem to be present on system folders such as 'My Pictures', 'My Music' & 'My Videos'

My apologies - it's the View menu, or you can right-click on a folder and choose Properties. Then you should have the Customize tab.

Unfortunately, the customize tab does not seem to be present on system-created folders such as 'My Pictures', 'My Music' & 'My Videos'.

It does on all of my systems.

Have you tweaked your system and move the "My Documents" to another drive or different folder?

It would seem it well should, but in part nor whole have I tweaked or moved those directories or the parent "My Documents".

Give us a screen shot of your "properties pane" with the folder selection on side.

The first problem I see is that the folder is "Read ONLY" change it to remove this and see what happens. Also check the "My Documents" folder, to see if it is read only also.

Re: View as a slide show (XPP)

Yes, the 'My Documents' was also read only, however, as you can see by the screenshot below, when I cleared the 'Read only' box, it goes through the motion of applying the modified attributes, but then it still shows the attributes as 'Read only'. I cleared it 6 times in both 'My Documents' as well as 'My Pictures' and rebooted, but it remains as 'Read only'.

One thing I notice is that the box is filled with a square rather than the usual checkmark. Is this indicative of anything? And if it is still read-only, then what perhaps is occurring when it appears to apply the new attributes when I attempt to clear the box?

    Bruce,

I've found several folders like that on my machine where the read-only flag was set and couldn't be cleared. I created another folder, copied all files and subfolders to it, changed the attribute, deleted the old folder and renamed the new folder. I dunno.
