    Scot Finnie on SP-1 (XP)

A handful of problems don't a disaster make, but you might want to give Scot Finnie's current newsletter a look-see...

BigAl, take a look at the http://www.winxpnews.com site. A week after publishing several negative comments about sp-1 he has now gotten about 80% positive comments. That would lead me to think that the positive percentage is even higher than 80. According to a professional statistician I know, even with an invitation to comment many people with positive results aren't going to take the time. People in newsletters and newsgroups are much more likely to say something negative. That said, as with any update of any significance one should always back up your system before installation. Yes, even though the sp-1 install makes a recovery point. Turn off all anti-virus software. Have only the barest minimum running (i.e. kill everything you can in the system notification area). Horror of horrors RTFM first - that is the readme and other documentation online. While all this will not guarantee a success your odds will improve considerably.

It has been found that a LOT of the WAREZ types are having all kinds of problems after installing SP1. Could it be them that is reporting the problems and NOT telling any one about their source of the OS.

    Dave,
I understand that a lot of the "warez" types also had bootleg copies of SP1 on their machines. I also understand that MS had their code written so that it rejected the beta bootlegs and wouldn't let them do a windows update with the hot copies. I'm sure that there was a LOT of moaning and groaning about the ensuing attempts to go further with Xp. Result: false negative comments on SP1. <img src=/S/doh.gif border=0 alt=doh width=15 height=15>

Amen to Joe, Dave and Viking. I was just passing along what I read from Scot Finnie. Since that time I've also gotten a newsletter from Infinisource.Com that also says there have been problems with SP-1. I'm just passing it along for what it's worth to people in The Lounge. Whenever my CD comes in the mail, I plan to do just what you said, Joe - backup and give it a shot. I don't know nuttin 'bout no warez or other bandit stuff. Of course, as you might expect, these newsletters don't give a lot of details, just the fact that there have been problems.

Re: Scot Finnie on SP-1 (XP)

Dave--While a lot of bootlegged copies may have trouble with SP1, and the Microsoft charts on their sites and at their meetings and on their powerpoints show huge amounts of piracy, particularly abroad with 18 wheelers delivering copies of XP Pro for 3 bucks on streetcorners in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Asia, Europe and a number of countries. But simply because these are Windows operating systems, service packs, and patches plenty of people with legitimate copies are of course going to have a myriad of problems. Mine runs fine, but if I do have problems even understanding that 7/10 blue screens according to MS's powerpoints and a lot of other articles are due to driver related problems--I won't be surprised. WMP 8 corrupted on me prior to SP1--I didn't like it but learned and someone was nice enough to send me a fix from a MS engineer after the engineer offered 10 prior fixes that didn't work. SP1 works fine, but WMP9 corrupted--it's a beta--I tried replacing the codecs and it worked like a charm. Sure I could have done a million things to cause it--if only I knew what.
But plenty of people with legitimate copies have problems and gripes as you know much better than I with Windows OS's. To date, their are about 70 security notifications from MS for Windows XP and 53 patches. This cascade of patches doesn't promote stability and is an environment for bugs to flourish as well as a bromide for them. Scott Charney, Microsoft's new Security Strategist has his hands full.
John Dvorac from PC Magazine who has won lots of awards has gripes and problems with XP and he can get most of the software he wants free.
