    Posts in descending date sequence

    I can't find a reference to this:

I like to view all messages in a thread at once. I think that that is called Expanded, as distinct from Collapsed therads. If I click on a thread in a forum, I see the original post at the top, the first reply immediately below it, and so on down to the latest post.

I have to scroll way down to see the most recent post. Sometimes I forget to click "show all", darn!

Is there a setting which will show the most recent additions to the thread at the top of the display? I'd love to do that.

You mean in Flat mode. Ummm... I think somebody wrote a hack to do that - I'll go have a look.

Thanks. I just checked again. In an earlier reply to a post on another planet you mentiond storage of graphics reducing the "hits" on the database by one.

I figure that currently I must "hit" when I click the thread, and again when I click "show all", then there's the delay (for me) while I scroll down).

A simple inversion of sequence would obviate the extra expense.

Re: Posts in descending date sequence

This might (at least as an option) also have a benefit when viewing in threaded mode:

Suppose I come to a long thread, in which there are three new messages. I click on the third to last message, and this takes me into the 'thread view'.
In the thread view, I want to view each of the three new messages in turn. Because it's a long thread, the links to the messages are way down at the bottom of the page, while the message content gets displayed at the very top - lots of scrolling up and down and back again just to view each message.
Having the option to display the threaded messages with most recent at the top would obviate the need for all that laborious scrolling....

Theres a button on my keyboard which takes me straight to the most recent post. It is marked "End".

But it means demousing my right hand. If the left and right arrows would move to the previous or next thread, I would hardly need the mouse.

Hail fellow keyboard-jockey, thanks the tip. (Suppose it should have been obvious, but I'm still feeling my way around.) I like the idea of using the left & right-arrows, if it could be achieved. Gee, I miss C:.

    David,

The use of that may depend on the defaults you've set to display. There's a setting, "Total posts to show on one page when viewing a thread in flat mode (default is 10)".

I have mine set on 25 (I have a slow modem). Even on that, I have many threads which go to more than one page. So the "end" key only works for me on shoter threads.

Re: Posts in descending date sequence

I have lounge entries sorted in descending date order.
I read the lounge topics by opening a topic (eg Outlook) and going forward through the pages until I find the last entry marked "New". I start reading there - topics organised in flat mode - and use 'Previous Thread' to step back through the entries. Working this way gives me an automatic stop at the last (=latest) entry since the Previous Thread button is greyed out. My query/whinge is that, if I ever post an answer to a query (not a frequent occurrence with all the other brain power focused on the lounge), when I post it I am immediately taken to the head of the queue as this post is now the 'latest' entry and I've skipped over all the other 'New' items.
Is there any way to delay/prevent this happening?

    > I am immediately taken to the head of the queue

    I've noticed/disliked this too.

To rub sault (hah hah) into the wound, after the reply is posted, I'm taken back to the top (first posting) of the current thread and have to scroll all the way down again.

Hence, I think, my initial question: can I coerce this expanded thread to show the latest post at the top of the screen? If this were possible, then as soon as I pressed the "Post" button on this post, I'd see this post just as others would see it, and then the PREVIOUS latest post below that.

Bonus 1: I'm more likely to quickly re-edit my latest post to include responses to the latest postings from various colleagues here (thus reducing post-clutter). (Sound of all the Moderators scrambling onto the banwidthwaggon .....)

Bonus 2: I'm going to be seeing the LATEST ideas and caveats BEFORE wading through the original post. Consider how many times we post a solution and then see the dribbles of small admendments that follow on. By redaing last-first, we can tuck these amendments in our short-term memory for use when reading the solution.

Re: Posts in descending date sequence

Hmmm. Doesn't work for me; not to the last subject on a page of threads, nor to the last message (most recent posting) ina screen of a single thread expanded.

I wonder if I'm doing something wrong?

BTW I am a ultra-keen advocate of the keyboard over the mouse, so I'd love to get THIS baby working ......

I'm beginning to warm more and more to your reasoning. I couldn't find a ready-made hack so I'll have to do it myself. Watch this space...

Re: Posts in descending date sequence

OK. keep your options open. There's likely another "fix" required somewhere.

I'm posting these "How do I?" posts because I seem to have settled into a mode that works-almost for me. It involves getting email notification of replies, browsing New posts on four forums (fourums?), and using the Eudora Email list to make sure that I've visited each response before the day is through.

It's largely a result of this approach that has led me to sorting through posts in what I hope is a rational manner.

As I get up to speed I notice that I'm sometimes posting several replies where one amalgamated reply might serve future readers of a thread frustration.

A better response (on my part) seems to hinge on a better view of what I'm responding too.

I hope all that makes sense.

I don't know what reader you used in your BBS days, Chris, but most of them work more in threaded mode. And an offline reader capability works a little different than a Net Board. I'd still prefer to have an OLMR capability for Net Boards, especially some of the very long threads, so I can read at leisure.

I just learned (was forced to learn) to select "All" and drag the scroll bar to the bottom, then start back up.

    >to select "All" and drag the scroll bar to the bottom, then start back up.

Here's a simple experiment for those of you reading this who have not yet gone to the WORD forum this morning/afternoon/evening.

WORD gets a trillion (USA) posts a day. I jump to Word and notice that my screen is full of NEW posts. I guess that page 2 also has new posts, so I click on the "2".

Right now, start counting them clicks.

Sure enough, there are about six NEW posts there too.

I read the first (lowest on the screen) and decide to respond to it (Click, click, click ...) and submit my response.

I am taken back to the top of page 1, whereupon I have to click on "2" again, and looky-looky! Because I have posted a reply, all the stuff on page 1 is getting shunted down to page 2.

    (click, click, click)

After replying to maybe three posts I get the idea that maybe it is a bad idea to respond to posts on page 2 (some would say "Good!") or that it is a good idea to process ONLY those posts on page 1 ("Bad!") because I'm spending half my remaining time on this planet getting back to where I was three minutes ago.

No wonder that BACK button looks so inviting!

What the world needs now, is a cookie (the Lounge does supply plates of cookies, doesn't it) that remembers where I was immediately before I jumped into reply mode (PLEASE NOTE HOW THIS TIES IN WITH MY SUGGESTION IN THE THREAD "PRIVATE MESSAGES") and retuns me there immediately after I've hit the submit button.

Re: Posts in descending date sequence

You could increase the initial number of posts displayed (Edit Profile / Display Preferences) - but this may inevitably force you to download a minimum number of posts in the 'less active' forums.
It's probably all down to balancing clicks on the mouse against clicks on the clock.
