WinXP Search (Win XP Home Ed)

I recently purchased a used HP laptop with Windows XP Home Edition. When I try to run a search from the start menu, I get the message "A file that is required to run Search Companion cannot be found. You may need to run setup." When I try to run Setup I am told to go to go to Control Panel and run Add Remove Windows components. I have tried this and cannot find where to reinstall Search Companion. Can anybody help me out?

If this is a OEM version of Windows XP, then the OEM may have mad changes to the Search engine within XP. I woul contact them or visit their web page and see if they have any support for this model of laptop.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Hi Jim.
    Here's a quote from http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm:

    Search - Doesn't Work

Open Explorer and go to the WindowsInf folder. Locate the srchasst.inf file. Right click it and select Install. You'll need your XP CD or the files from the I386 folder. (This fix will require you to have your Win XP CD).

The WindowsInf folder is a hidden folder. You can adjust your Explorer Folder Options (View tab) to Show hidden files and folders. You can also click Start, Run and enter %SystemRoot%Inf to open directly to the Inf folder.

This is a very good XP site.

    Joe

    Joe,
Thanks for the help. After I installed the srchasst.inf file my search worked great.

    Dave,
Before I had a chance to follow your recommendation I got Joe's recommendation and tried it and fixed my problem.
    Thanks anyway.
