startup menu win98se

My system's, (Win98se, 256 Ram, 20G HD, 450 Mhz Pentium III) Start up file is crammed full of entries. I have gone through the msconfig's start option and un-clicked as many of the entries that I felt safe to do. My problem is: How can I completely eliminate those entries that I want flushed off the menu? There are several entries that are duplicated even though I have them un-checked.

I am also curious to know how these entries are placed in the start menu, and where do they reside on the system?

Are there some of the entries that must remain on the start menu for proper operation of the system?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Al:

<<How can I completely eliminate those entries that I want flushed off the menu? >>

You can start by unchecking them in msconfig/startup. There are very few that you actually need. You can also go to your actual start menu (there may be more than one if you have profiles enabled) & remove any entry in the startup file--these are not necessary.

They are contained in the registry under Run & Run Services in a couple of places. The easiest way to find them is first download a utility called Regedit Plus from zdnet. This has a favorites menu where there are common places in the registry that you can edit. REMEMBER TO BACK UP THE REGISTRY BEFORE EDITING.

You can go to this post to see the link for regedit plus. It's the easy way to edit the registry.

I've also attached a picture of what I have loading in msconfig/startup.

Here's the second image. I don't know how to load two images in one post.

The reason you don't know how is because you can't.

Multiple attachments are on the w3t requested enhancement list.

Re: startup menu win98se

I think I may have misunderstood the question, but if removing items from the Start Menu is all that is required, why not highlight an offending item, then right click and choose Delete? Since they are mere shortcuts, this does no permanent damage. Similarly if something is starting from the ProgramsStartUp folder, it can be removed if it appears there. I use MSConfig. only for disabling those programs that do not appear in this folder.
There is also a folder in your Windows directory called Start Menu from which things can be removed directly.
Under Win2k this is rather more hidden, being in Documents&Settings'Workstation Title'Start Menu. Even more important though, as MSConfig seems to have been left out.
ps. is it me, or has that attachment increased the width of my viewed page, so that a horizontal scrollbar now appears?
