    gpedit.msc (WinXP Home SP1)

I assisted and neighbor in upgradeing (installing) to WinXP Home on his standalone PC. All went quite well. However, I have a question on one little item.

He noticed instantly the nagging little MS Messanger process. I have read here, and used, the Group Policy editor to turn off messanger on my XP Pro machine. I tried it on his new Home installation and cannot find 'gpedit.msc'. I know it lives in the SYSTEM32.....at least it does on my machine. I could not find it on the HOME machine. Is it disabled, or something?

Or, is it assumed by MS that HOME has not groups? <img src=/S/bullseye.gif border=0 alt=bullseye width=45 height=15> If so, any suggestions on turning off the messanger would be appreciated.

    Thanks a lot. <img src=/S/cool.gif border=0 alt=cool width=15 height=15>

    Re: gpedit.msc (WinXP Home SP1)

Windows XP home HAS groups - Start | Control Panel | Performance and Maintenance | Administrative Tools | Computer Management, then navigate to Groups under "Local Users and Groups".

If you have SP1 installed, you can uninstall Windows Messenger from Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs | Add/Remove Windows Components (icon on the left) and uncheck "Windows Messenger".
However, you can disable Windows Messenger by clicking Start | Run and typing exactly as follow (or copy/paste):

    RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%INFmsmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

    and hit Enter.
Personally I prefer the second way - it is fast and I see no use for Windows Messenger.

Thank you very much for your help! I will use the second method that you suggest. I think I remember reading it somewhere else here; but forgot it. I guess I could have used it on my XP Pro system too.

I very much appreciate your help!

Bob, XPH does not have gpedit. Only XPP.
