    'Page Setup' changes itself (2000)

Some of the page setups on reports in our membership database seems to be intermittently changing themselves back to defaults.
The first place we noticed this was that suddenly when we went to print labels, there was only one column (instead of three). I fixed it, but after awhile it goes back to one column and needs to be fixed again.
Today a similar thing happened with a report that prints a directory. Suddenly the margins were all set at 1" - I had created the report with a .5 inch margin on the right side, and it has been working fine that way for over a year. I fixed it, but, given our experience with the labels, I expect that it will go back to defaults again at some point.

I created this database. It has a front-end with all the forms, etc, and a back-end with just the tables (thanks to other tips on this forum!). It resides on the computer of our secretary, which is networked with three other computers in our office. Each of us has our own copy of Access, but we all use the one copy of the database which is on her computer. I am the only person who makes any changes in the structure of the database. The secretary is the only person besides myself who changes data. The other two people only use it to occasionally look up a name.

Any clues why these defaults reset from time to time - and how to stop them?
    Thanks,
    -cynthia

This bug was fixed by Office 2000 Service Release 1A (SR-1A). Recommend download & install this upgrade. For more info refer to following MS Knowledge Base articles:

Thank you very much. Looking at these articles, I have an additional question. Because we have a somewhat non-standard installation of Office 2000, it looks like installing the update is something I should call our technician to do. But it isn't clear to me whether perhaps simply unchecking the "Name Autocorrect" function might work.
    My questions are:
    1) What function do I lose if I uncheck the name autocorrect function? It is not clear to me from the "what's this" explanation precisely what this function does.
    2) Will simply unchecking this function solve the problem? If so, would there be any reason not to simply do this?
    3) If I install the updates, do I ALSO need to uncheck the function?

    Thanks,
    -cynthia

Re: 'Page Setup' changes itself (2000)

MY recommendation would be to disable the Name AutoCorrect "feature" entirely AND to install the Office 2K SR-1A update. Others may not agree with this recommendation. The Service Release fixes a whole bunch of bugs not only in Access but the other Office apps as well. The Name AutoCorrect function will save you the trouble of having to track down & manually make changes to object references if you decide to rename an object such as a table or form, but it does not work in all contexts (such as VBA code) and reportedly has an adverse impact on an application's performance, as it requires a bit of overhead to do all this name tracking. For detailed explanation of how Name AutoCorrect works, and what it does and doesn't do, refer to the Help topic (search for "AutoCorrect").

If you do not plan on installing SR-1A in near term, then you will need to disable Name AutoCorrect unless you'd rather reset your report margins every time you reopen the database. Back when I first installed Office 2K & A2K I had same problem with report margins (this was before SR-1 was released) and turning off Name AutoCorrect (which is on by default in A2K) fixed problem. After this episode, I've always kept it turned off, even after installing SR-1A, so not sure how well it behaves if you have the update installed. Theoretically you should be able to use it w/o the unwanted side effects, but since I don't use the feature I can't make a positive assertion to that effect.

For right now I'd recommend simply disabling Name AutoCorrect and see if it corrects problem.

Thank you very much. I'll turn of the Name Autocorrect for now, and put the update on the "to do" list for the next time we have the technician come in. And thank you for the extra explanations.
