    Keep those $NtUninstallQxxx$ Folders (5.1 B2600)

In my C:Windows folder are 14.4MB worth of $NtUninstallQxxxxxx$ folders. I can move them to a CD-ROM but the real question is do I need them?

I would leave them there. You will find that they are linked to the same item listed in the "Add and remove programs" within the Control Panel.

If you've applied SP-1 there is no good reason to keep the folders associated with hotfixes that were integrated into SP-1. You'd only need to keep the folders for
    SP-2 hotfixes.

SP1 will NOT reinstall fixes that were already installed. That is WHY these are listed. When ONE does a SP1 down load, the current fixes will determine how much to and NOT to down load. Agine see what is listed in the Add and remove programs in the Control Panel.

If you are doing the 'express' version. I was thinking of the full blown version. So, if you do that you can get rid of all the previously applied hotfixes that have been integrated. Sorry for the trouble.,

    Re: Keep those $NtUninstallQxxx$ Folders (5.1 B2600)

If you do not plan to uninstall any hotfixes (patches), you can delete Uninstall information - it will not harm your Windows installation. To do so, you can delete hidden read-only $NTUninstallQ<number>$ folders in your WIndows folder AND corresponding keys (starting with the same Q number) under
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentV ersionUninstall
    in your Registry.
But, if additional 15 MB of free space is not critical for you, it is better left them intact - you can harm your Windows accidentally if you are not experienced.

    Re: Keep those $NtUninstallQxxx$ Folders (5.1 B2600)

I have a number of these $NtUninstallQxxxxxx$ hotfix folders also. While I believe that they used to be listed in "Add/Remove Programs", I can no longer find them there. New folder $NtServicePackUninstall$ (149 MB) is not there either. I presume the latter is the roll-back file for SP1.

I have SP1 on CD from MS. Can I get rid of the $NtUninstallQxxxxxx$ folders? If so, how? If and when I decide I do not want to roll back to pre-SP1 status, how do I remove $NtServicePackUninstall$?

    Cheers,
    Paul

    Re: Keep those $NtUninstallQxxx$ Folders (5.1 B2600)

If you want, you can simply delete all (or any) of $NTUninstall... folders. They aren't necessary for your current Windows installation, but for uninstall (roll-back) purposes only.
SP1 patch, when installed, overwrites all pre-SP1 hotfixes (it is basically a collection of all these hotfixes), that's why when you didn't uncheck the option "Backup the old files..." during SP1 installation, the new folder wasn't created (you have individual folders instead). If you uninstall SP1, you will see again all hotfixes you install before SP1. And SP1 didn't update 149 MB of your files, only several MBytes which you didn't update before SP1 (most of the updates your installation does not required). Because of that, your backup files (previous versions) are stored under their individual Q numbers. For full list of fixes and individual Q numbers see
Categorized List of Fixes in Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1)
