CD-ROM doesn't work all the time when reading

We just inherited a very old Compaq pc-133, very old, and slow, and the CD-ROM didn't work, so we got it replaced. We installed WINDOWS 98 on it, and it did an auto-load of the CD, no problem, everything went fine. Then I burned a CD of cool backrounds to load onto the old computer. I made the CD, and put it into the CD-ROM, obviously it isn't going to Auto-Load, because they are just *.bmp files, so I went into Windows Explorer, and Clicked on the CD-ROM drive, to show all the files, so I could do a simple copy and paste onto the harddrive. But a message came up saying, "This drive is not accesable" or a variation of that. So can anyone tell me what the reason behind this might be?

Could be the disc you used. Some CD-R only drives cannot read burned CDs, because they don't reflect enough light. I presume the CD works in the burner. Have you tried it in another system to see if it's readable? First make sure the disc is good.

Did you format the CDR to be readable in a CD-ROM drive? e.g. with Adaptec, after I burn a CD, it asks me whether I want to keep the CDR in the same format (so I can write some more) or whether I want to format it so it can be read in most CD-ROM drives. I assume that other burners have the same option.

I've often found that an older system, even with an updated CD-ROM will not read a home burned CD. Try the disk in a newer system (not the CD-RW that it was created in) and see if it works. If it does, then it's most likely a system incompatibility and there's not much that can be done about that, unless you want to put the data on a bunch of 3 1/2 floppy disks and have at it.
