    Optical mouse shuts off

Occasionally (more and more lately) my MS USB optical IntelliMouse will shut off--the light is out and I can't get it working again unless I shut the computer down and restart (a simple restart doesn't seem to help--it has to go through the BIOS I guess).

How can I stop this from happening?

Do you allow your computer to go into standby before this happens, or does it arbitrarily stop working? Also - make sure you have the latest Intellipoint software from Microsoft.

Also, your advanced power management settings in the BIOS may be cutting your USB connections after a period of non-use, you might check to see if Advanced Power Management is enabled, and if so, either disable it or see if you can tweak the settings to leave the USB ports alone.

No the computer is not on standby; in fact it will happen while I'm working!

I tried to check my advanced power settings in BIOS (holding down F1 as the computer starts to get into BIOS). I couldn't see anything that would help. Would you advise? Thanks.

Ed, you may want to check into a BIOS update. It sounds suspiciously flaky to me. Can you provide system specs - make, model, any pertinent system information?

    Re: Optical mouse shuts off

You may want to check with MS. I have an Optical Wheel Mouse USB and about 5-6 months ago I got an unsolicited letter from them saying that there were problems with their mouse and to send purchase verification and they would send me a new mouse, which I did and they did. I thought it was pretty unusual that they offered to replace the mouse without me asking. Ummm, if anybody asks, SURE my mouse was having problems...

If I remember, the problems that MS described are similar to what is happening to you.

I had registered the mouse when I bought it (part of a $10 rebate), by the way. Once in awhile, putting up with the PITA pays off.

    good luck,
    kip
